INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Colts just continue adding big-time playmakers to their roster.
The team announced today that it has signed free agent cornerback Xavier Rhodes, a three-time Pro Bowler who was a First-Team All-Pro selection with the Minnesota Vikings in 2017. Terms of the deal weren't immediately released.
Rhodes, who turns 30 in June, has been one of the league's top corners since entering the league as a first-round (25th-overall) pick by the Vikings in the 2013 NFL Draft.
At 6-foot-1 and 218 pounds, Rhodes has used his elite blend of cover skills and physicality to collect 372 career tackles (15 for a loss) with 10 interceptions (one of which he returned for a touchdown) and three forced fumbles in his first seven NFL seasons.
Rhodes became a full-time starter his second season in 2014, and two years later he had his coming-out party when he finished tied for fifth in the NFL with five interceptions, earning his first-career Pro Bowl selection.
In 2017, Rhodes was one of the key pieces to Minnesota's No. 1-ranked defense; he finished with 56 tackles (one for a loss) with two interceptions and earned First-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.
Rhodes had a career-high 63 tackles (including a career-high-tying five tackles for loss) last season, and was named a Pro Bowler for a third time.
Rhodes stands to fit right in to compete as the Colts' top outside corner, and adds veteran experience and leadership to an extremely young, but talented, group of defensive backs. Already set to return at cornerback in 2020 are starters Kenny Moore II — one of the better slot corners in the NFL — and 2019 second-round pick Rock Ya-Sin.
Also fighting for roster spots this offseason at cornerback are Marvell Tell III, Quincy Wilson, Picasso Nelson Jr., Lafayette Pitts and Jackson Porter.
Rhodes is also the latest in a line of big-time moves being made by the Colts since the start of the new league year earlier this month. The team on March 18 acquired All-Pro defensive tackle DeForest Buckner in a trade with the San Francisco 49ers, and on Saturday announced it had signed eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback Philip Rivers.
Then, on Wednesday, the team announced the signing of free agent defensive tackle Sheldon Day.
