The Colts on Friday signed free agent running back Khalil Herbert, adding key depth to a running back room highlighted by Jonathan Taylor.

Herbert, a 2021 sixth-round pick, spent the last four seasons with the Chicago Bears (2021-2024) and Cincinnati Bengals (2024). The Bengals acquired Herbert in a mid-season trade from the Bears last season.

Over 56 career games (13 starts), Herbert has 400 rushing attempts for 1,905 yards with nine touchdowns; he also has 53 receptions for 312 yards and two receiving touchdowns. Since making his debut in 2021, Herbert's average of 4.8 yards per carry is sixth-highest among running backs with at least 400 carries (Taylor is fifth at 4.9 yards per carry).

Herbert's most productive season was 2022, when he rushed 129 times for a career high 731 yards (5.7 yards/carry) with five total touchdowns for the Bears.

The Colts now have four running backs on their roster: Taylor, Herbert, Tyler Goodson (who's appeared in 22 games over the last two seasons) and Salvon Ahmed (who spent time on the Colts' practice squad last season).
