Practice Notebook: QB Anthony Richardson, RB Jonathan Taylor taking injuries day by day

Richardson (oblique) was a limited participant in the Colts' Thursday practice, while Taylor (ankle) did not participate.

Practice Notebook 10.3

For the second day in a row, quarterback Anthony Richardson (oblique) was a limited participant in the Colts' Thursday practice ahead of their Week 5 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Running back Jonathan Taylor (ankle) did not participate in practice, also for the second day in a row.

Richardson exited in the first half of the Colts' win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday with what was initially reported as a hip injury; Taylor sustained a sprained ankle in the second half the game and did not return.

"At the start you always have to have rest, have time to have the injury calm down," Taylor said Thursday. "And then after that, you got to just start going to work, strengthening and making sure that it can handle that load."

Taylor said he was feeling better on Thursday than he had on previous days, and didn't rule out playing on Sunday. He compared his situation to how players routinely take "mental reps" of plays and schemes when they can't physically practice them, and how it's on the players to watch the film to ensure they are ready to go on gameday.

The Indianapolis Colts hit the Indiana Farm Bureau Football Center practice fields on Thursday of week 5 practice.

"At the end of the day, practice is very vital, practice is very important," Taylor said. "I just think at this level being a true professional is understanding your assignment, even if you have limited or little to no reps."

So, even if he gets little to no reps leading up to this weekend, what does Taylor need to see from himself to have confidence he can play on Sunday?

"Really being able to move around, really being able to get in and out of cuts, being able to explode, burst," he said. "Because especially at my position, defensive back, those are all heavy cutting positions."

Both Taylor and Richardson – who said on Wednesday that there was "definitely a lot of progress" from where he felt after the game – are focused on taking things day by day.

"We've got 48 – really 72 but really 48 hours – so just continuing to take it day by day," Taylor said. "You never know. A lot of special things have happened in a couple days."
