INDIANAPOLIS — Safety J.J. Wilcox, who spent the latter part of the 2018 season with the Indianapolis Colts, signed a free agent deal with the Atlanta Falcons, the team announced today.
Wilcox, 28, is the second member of the Colts 2018 team to sign elsewhere in 2019; wide receiver Ryan Grant signed a deal with the Oakland Raiders on April 3.
Signed as a free agent Dec. 18, Wilcox would appear in two regular-season contests with the Colts, finishing with five tackles and two special teams stops.
He also started in Indy's Divisional Round matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, finishing with six tackles and a pass defensed in that contest.
In six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Jets and Colts, Wilcox has played in 77 games with 39 starts and has 231 total tackles (three for a loss) with six interceptions, 16 passes defensed, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and five quarterback hits to his credit.
The Colts in 2019 will return both their starters at the safety position in Clayton Geathers (who re-signed with the team on March 20) and Malik Hooker. The team also will return key backups Matthias Farley and George Odum. The team also claimed former Cleveland Browns safety Derrick Kindred off waivers on April 2.
Others on Indy's offseason roster hoping to get a shot at a final roster spot at safety include Isaiah Johnson and Rolan Milligan.
