The Colts agreed to terms with free agent cornerback Charvarius Ward, adding an established veteran with 17 games of postseason experience to their secondary.
The 28-year-old Ward previous played for the Kansas City Chiefs (2018-2021) and San Francisco 49ers (2022-2024). He started in three Super Bowls, and his 13 passes defensed in playoff games are tied for seventh-most in the NFL since 1999. Ward started 15 of those 17 playoff games, tied with Richard Sherman for the second-most playoff starts among cornerbacks in the last 25 seasons.
Ward signed with the 49ers as a free agent in 2022 and started 46 games for San Francisco over the last three seasons, totaling six interceptions, 41 passes defensed, 213 tackles and two forced fumbles. In 2023, Ward earned Pro Bowl and second-team AP All-Pro honors behind a league-leading 23 passes defensed (five interceptions, 18 pass break-ups), and he recorded his first career pick-six that season.
Ward has recorded at least 10 passes defensed in four of his six seasons a full-time starter. Over his career, he's held opposing quarterbacks to a completion percentage of 55 percent and an 82.5 passer rating and when targeting him in coverage.
A native of McComb, Miss., Ward played in college at Hinds Community College and Middle Tennessee State. He originally signed with the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2018 and was traded to the Chiefs on roster cut-down day later that year.
