The Colts fought past injuries and fought hard to stop a late-game comeback en route to their second win of the season on Sunday as they beat the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-24 at Lucas Oil Stadium.
With a heavy contingent of Steelers fans at Lucas Oil Stadium, the Colts set the tone for Sunday's game in the best way possible: a quick and concise scoring drive. On the Colts' first possession of the game, Anthony Richardson led his offense on an eight-play, 70-yard scoring drive, making quick work of the No. 1 defense in the NFL. The drive began with a 32-yard completion to wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and was followed by a series of rushing plays from running back Jonathan Taylor.
Taylor was the one to carry the ball into the endzone on a three-yard rush for his fourth touchdown of the season.
The Colts' defense came out with similar energy, keeping the Steelers offense scoreless on their first possession and forcing a punt return.
The following Colts' possession was similar to their first; it started with a 28-yard completion to Pittman and consisted of a series of handoffs and rushing plays. Richardson ran the ball himself on a few plays, including a 16-yard dash to put the Colts at Pittsburgh's 29-yard line.
Richardson was hurt on the play, however, and after coming back onto the field after two plays, he was injured again and went back to the Colts' locker room. Backup quarterback Joe Flacco led the remainder of the drive, ending in a 4-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Josh Downs to put the Colts up 14-0.
The Colts' defense continued to hold strong, forcing a turnover on downs after linebacker Zaire Franklin tackled Steelers quarterback Justin Fields. And once again, the offense capitalized on their possession – this time, with a nine-play, 25-yard drive led by Flacco that ended in a field goal.
Flacco would remain the Colts' quarterback for the remainder of the game, as Richardson was ruled out with a hip injury in the second quarter.
As the second quarter continued, Fields and the Steelers offense found their rhythm in the run game, marching down the field to come within 15 yards of the endzone. As the Steelers crept closer, however, safety Nick Cross flew into Pittsburgh wide receiver George Pickens to force a fumble. The ball was recovered by safety Julian Blackmon, and the Colts regained possession while maintaining their 17-0 lead.
The Steelers scored their first points of the game on an eight-play, 44-yard drive that ended in a 50-yard field goal just before halftime.
It was the Colts' defense that dominated in the beginning of the second half, consistently pressuring Fields – Blackmon and defensive tackle Grover Stewart combined to sack Fields on the Steelers' first possession of the third quarter, and a strip-sack by cornerback Chris Lammons forced a fumble that Lammons then recovered himself.
The Colts couldn't score on the following drive, though, as kicker Matt Gay missed a 54-yard field goal.
Fields then took the Steelers on a six-play, 56-yard scoring drive to score Pittsburgh's first touchdown of the afternoon, as Fields scrambled for five yards to cross the goal line and bring the score to 17-10.
Flacco and the Colts quickly silenced the Steelers fans, however, as they went on a 10-play, 70-yard touchdown drive. Flacco connected with wide receiver Josh Downs for 25 yards for a crucial third down to bring the Colts to Pittsburgh's 15-yard line, and tight end Drew Ogletree was the recipient of the 15-yard touchdown pass.
Ogletree's touchdown was the first Colts' touchdown to be scored by a tight end this season.
The Steelers moved right back down the field, though, and brought the game back within one score on an eight-play, 70-yard drive; Fields scrambled for his second touchdown of the day.
The combination of Downs and Taylor continued to be lethal for the Steelers' defense; Taylor rushed for 21 yards and Downs had another crucial third-down conversion run in the red zone on the Colts' next possession. Gay made a 35-yard field goal, and the Colts went up 27-17 with six minutes and three seconds left in the fourth quarter.
But the Steelers responded once again, moving efficiently against the Colts' defense as a seven-play, 70-yard scoring drive brought them within three points of tying with just under four minutes remaining in the game.
As they had the whole game, though, the Colts defense stepped up. Pressure around Fields forced a fumble and loss of yardage, and cornerback Jaylon Jones broke up a deep pass that would have brought the Steelers well within scoring range. And thanks to a pass breakup by Adetomiwa Adebawore, the Steelers turned it over on downs.
The Colts held onto their lead, and with the 27-24 victory moved to 2-2 on the season.
