EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Anthony Richardson put on a show in his return from a two-game absence, completing 20 of 30 passes for 272 yards with a passing touchdown and two rushing scores on Sunday against the New York Jets. Richardson's second rushing score was the game-winner, as it put the Colts ahead by one with 46 seconds to go.
Richardson's previous career high was 223 passing yards, which was set in his NFL debut last year.
Richardson and the Colts' offense scored on three of their first four possessions to open the game, punctuated by the young quarterback pummeling safety Jalen Mills on his way into the end zone for a two-yard touchdown early in the second quarter. The Jets, meanwhile, did not pick up a first down until just after the two-minute warning of the first half; they turned that late momentum into a 29-yard catch-and-run touchdown by running back Breece Hall.
While the Colts only averaged 4.3 yards per play in the first half, they were intentional about running the ball – Steichen called 22 runs against 13 Richardson dropbacks. Richardson completed eight of 10 passes for 103 yards in the first half, and the Colts held the ball for 19:26 over the first 30 minutes on Sunday.
The Jets quickly took the lead after halftime when linebacker Jamien Sherwood strip-sacked Richardson deep in Colts territory, with defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw recovering the loose ball. Hall turned the turnover into an 18-yard touchdown run two plays later.
Richardson and the Colts' offense struck back, though, with Richardson sparking the drive with a 15-yard completion to wide receiver Josh Downs on third and 13. On a third-and-8 a few plays later, Richardson was narrowly able to avoid a sack and flipped a pass out to Downs, who scampered for a gain of 11 and a first down.
Matt Gay knocked in a 56-yard field goal to put the Colts up by two midway through the third quarter.
The Jets were able to take the lead back when kicker Anders Carlson snuck a 58-yard field goal through the uprights later in the third quarter. Carlson's kick was set up by a 15-yard fair catch interference penalty assessed to wide receiver Ashton Dulin on a punt, which gave the Jets the ball at the Colts' 38-yard line.
New York again generated points off advantageous field position, with the Colts getting backed up into a third-and-17 on their own 11-yard line and punting to the Jets' 41-yard line late in the third quarter. A 24-yard Rodgers completion to wide receiver Davante Adams and a 16-yard run by Hall set up a 10-yard touchdown from Rogers to tight end Kenny Yeboah, which put New York up by eight early in the fourth quarter.
Richardson responded with a crisp drive highlighted by a remarkable 12-yard completion to tight end Mo Alie-Cox on a key third-and-two play just inside Jets territory. Richardson connected with Downs for a 10-yard touchdown, though a game-tying two-point try fell incomplete when his pass to Alie-Cox sailed out of the tight end's reach.
The Jets responded with a drive lasting seven minutes and 30 seconds, with Rodgers' 17-yard completion to wide receiver Xavier Gipson on an early third-and-14 ultimately leading to Carlson putting the Jets up by five with a 35-yard field goal.
Richardson took over with 2:41 left needing a touchdown. On second and six, Richardson hit wide receiver Alec Pierce on a pump-fake go ball for a 39-yard gain, which moved the Colts to the Jets' 27-yard line at the two-minute warning. A 17-yard completion to Downs gave the Colts first and goal from the 10-yard line; Richardson punched in a four-yard touchdown to give the Colts the lead with 46 seconds left.
Kwity Paye ended the game with a sack of Rodgers.
The Colts take on the New York Jets in an AFC matchup in Week 11 at MetLife Stadium.
