In their first home game since Nov. 24, the Colts came into Lucas Oil Stadium ready to handle business and stay in the fight for the playoffs – no matter how slim of a chance they had. And handle business they did, beating the Tennessee Titans 38-30.
Quarterback Anthony Richardson was 7-of-11 with for 131 yards and one touchdown, and rushed for 70 yards and a touchdown. Richardson now holds the team record for most rushing touchdowns (6) by a quarterback) and has the most rushing yards in a season by a quarterback in franchise history. Jonathan Taylor finished with 218 rushing yard and three touchdowns.
The Titans struck first, as quarterback Mason Rudolph connected with wide receiver Calvin Ridley for a 38-yard touchdown halfway through the first quarter. The Colts defense forced the Titans to attempt a 53-yard field goal on their ensuing possession and the kick was just short, keeping the score 7-0 and giving the Colts an opportunity to retake the momentum on their home turf. They did just that.
On the next possession, Richardson led a six-play, 57-yard drive in which he and Taylor traded off running the ball – Richardson had a 29-yard run to bring the Colts to Tennessee's 12-yard line – and carved up the Titans' defensive line all the way to the end zone.
Guard Quenton Nelson led the way for Richardson to run five yards for his sixth rushing touchdown of the season; Nelson knew it all the way, raising his arms in celebration as soon as he crossed the goal line with Richardson right behind him.
The defense forced Tennessee to go three-and-out, keeping Rudolph from finding any success and quickly getting the ball back in Richardson's hands. And once again, the offense came through.
All four plays of the Colts' 80-yard drive were handoffs to Taylor, who delivered each time as the Titans' defensive line struggled to stop the run. With the Colts lined up at their own 35-yard line, Taylor maneuvered his way around the defense with ease, breaking free for a 65-yard touchdown run for one of the longest runs of his career. The running back was swarmed by his teammates on the sidelines as the Colts took a 14-7 lead.
With seven and a half minutes to go in the second quarter, Taylor already had 112 rushing yards.
The Colts continued to pour it on for the rest of the quarter, taking a 24-7 lead heading into halftime. Wide receiver Adonai Mitchell recorded a career-long 39-yard reception to set up a 31-yard field goal from kicker Matt Gay, and an interception by cornerback Kenny Moore II (his third of the season) gave the Colts one more opportunity to score before heading into the locker room. And thanks to some magic footwork from wide receiver Josh Downs along the sidelines, the Colts extended their lead even further.
Coming out of halftime, the Colts continued to dominate on both sides of the ball and didn't waste any time in putting even more points on the board. On the first play of the third quarter, Taylor raced 70 yards down the field for his second touchdown of the day to put the Colts up 31-7. And just when it seemed like the Titans might be able to convert on third down, defensive end Kwity Paye came up with a massive sack (his seventh of the season) to force yet another Titans punt.
The Titans simply couldn't find any answers for the Colts' ground game, and the duo of Richardson and Taylor just kept taking advantage. For his third touchdown of the day, Taylor didn't need a big explosive run – a one yard lunge across the goal line was good enough to put the Colts up 38-7. Sunday marked the first time Taylor has scored more than two touchdowns in a game since Nov. 21, 2021 (four against the Buffalo Bills).
Tennessee was able to put points on the board for the first time since the first quarter, scoring a touchdown and succeeding on the two-point conversion to make the score 38-15 with three minutes to go in the third quarter.
The Colts defense lapsed in the fourth quarter, allowing two more Tennessee touchdowns to narrow the score to 38-30. But after getting the ball back with just under three minutes to go, Richardson and the offense held onto the ball long enough to return the ball to the Titans with three seconds left. Moore recorded his second interception of the day to put the icing on the cake and seal the win.
