Banged-up Colts unable to end Jaguars road losing streak in Week 5 loss

The Colts (2-3) lost Sunday to the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-4) at EverBank Stadium, the team's 10th consecutive defeat to the Jaguars on the road.

37to34

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A depleted Colts team erased a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit but was unable to end its road losing streak to the Jacksonville Jaguars, losing, 37-34, on Sunday at EverBank Stadium.

The Colts in Week 5 were without nine projected starters from Day 1 of training camp: Quarterback Anthony Richardson (oblique), running back Jonathan Taylor (ankle), center Ryan Kelly (neck), defensive end Kwity Paye (quad), defensive end Tyquan Lewis (elbow, injured reserve), defensive end Samson Ebukam (Achilles, injured reserve), defensive tackle DeForest Buckner (ankle, injured reserve), cornerback Kenny Moore II (hip) and cornerback JuJu Brents (knee, injured reserve).

Still, quarterback Joe Flacco erased the Jaguars' two-touchdown fourth quarter lead with three deep balls to wide receiver Alec Pierce, the last of which was a 65-yard game-tying touchdown.

The Jaguars responded, though, with kicker Cam Little connecting on a 49-yard field goal with 17 seconds left, which wound up being the game-winner.

Sunday's defeat marked the Colts' 10th consecutive road loss to the Jaguars. The Colts last won in Jacksonville in 2014.

The Colts jumped out to an early lead as Flacco completed all seven of his passes – three to wide receiver Josh Downs – for 75 yards on the game's opening possession, with his one-yard touchdown to wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. on fourth down capping the drive.

Jacksonville struck back, though, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence finding wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. for an 85-yard touchdown halfway through the second quarter. It was the longest play allowed by the Colts since 2012, and the longest pass allowed by the Colts since the New England Patriots' Tom Brady completed a 91-yard touchdown to wide receiver David Patten on Oct. 21, 2001.

The Colts evened things up at 10 with a Matt Gay 30-yard field goal in the second quarter. Jaguars defensive end Travon Walker's strip-sack of Flacco, which was recovered deep in Colts territory by defensive end Josh Hines-Allen, led to a short Cam Little field goal that put Jacksonville up, 13-10, at halftime.

Cornerback Jaylon Jones had an impactful first half, with a drive-ending pass break-up and a forced fumble.

A 54-yard punt return by Devin Duvernay set up an 18-yard touchdown rush from running back Tank Bigsby, which put the Jaguars up by 10 just after the halfway point of the third quarter.

The Colts' offense – which had sputtered to 4.1 yards per play after their first possession – found life on a methodical 15-play, 70-yard drive that ended with tight end Mo Alie-Cox hauling in an 18-yard jump ball touchdown, cutting the Jaguars' lead to three to begin the fourth quarter.

Alie-Cox's touchdown sparked a wild back-and-forth final stanza that saw 41 points go on the scoreboard.

Lawrence connected with wide receiver Christian Kirk for a 61-yard gain on a second-and-24 on the ensuing possession, which set up a four-yard touchdown catch by tight end Brenton Strange that put the Jaguars up by 10 once again.

Gay got the Colts back within a score with a 37-yard field goal that split the uprights with six minutes left. But Bigsby quickly responded with, a 65-yard touchdown run – the Jaguars' third play of 60 or more yards in the game.

Flacco kept the Colts alive, though, with a 24-yard completion to Pierce – which he impressively caught while falling to the ground – and then a 45-yard completion to Pierce. Running back Trey Sermon punched in a touchdown to cut things to a one-scoring game again with just under 4:30 left.

And then Flacco delivered in the clutch, finding Pierce again for a 65-yard touchdown to tie the game at 34 with 2:40 remaining.

Lawrence, though, quickly marched the Jaguars into field goal range. The Colts took over with no timeouts and the ball on their own 30-yard line but the game ended when Walker sacked Flacco to run out the clock.

Right guard Will Fries was carted off the field in the second half with a knee injury and did not return.

The Colts take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in an AFC South matchup in Week 5 at EverBank Stadium.
