INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts will carry three quarterbacks on their 53-man roster in Week 12.
Stephen Morris was elevated to the active roster (from the practice squad) on Wednesday afternoon.
Morris joins Andrew Luck and Scott Tolzien on the active roster for Thursday night's game versus the Steelers.
The addition of a third quarterback is another indicator of the doubt in Luck's availability for Thanksgiving night.
Asked Tuesday about Morris being a candidate to start this week, Chuck Pagano wouldn't share the Colts exact plans.
Tolzien has the more experience of the two and has worked with the first-team offense during various practices this season.
The drawback to Morris is that he's never been active for an NFL game and has quarterbacked the scout team for the past two and a half months.
A strong 2016 preseason initially kept Morris on the Colts active roster. This preseason Morris was 39-of-61 (63.9%) for 531 yards, 4 touchdowns and 1 interception. Morris had a 106.7 rating and added 8 carries for 50 yards and a rushing touchdown.
Injuries early in 2016 forced the Colts to remove Morris from their 53-man roster. He's been on the practice squad since.
While the expectation remains that Tolzien will start versus Pittsburgh, the Colts have used a two-quarterback system in a game before.
In last year's regular season finale, the Colts used Josh Freeman for the majority of the game, while Ryan Lindley took the two-minute reps.
The short week the Colts are in the midst of though, with just walk-through practices, would likely impact how much they could involve Morris into the game plan.*
To make room for Morris on the 53-man roster, the Colts waived wide receiver Devin Street.
Also on Wednesday, the Colts brought back cornerback Darryl Morris to the active roster and placed undrafted cornerback Frankie Williams on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list.Morris played in six games for the Colts earlier this season.
