The weeks between the end of the regular season and the Super Bowl are usually pretty quiet. Since the Colts' season ended in early January, they parted ways with Gus Bradley and hiring Lou Anarumo as defensive coordinator.
And that's been about it.
But as the clock hit zero on the final game of the 2024 NFL season – with the Philadelphia Eagles stomping the Kansas City Chiefs – the league's never-ending conveyer belt of news will quickly move toward the 2025 offseason. The NFL Combine begins in just over two weeks, after all.
With that in mind, here's a primer for what the next three or so months will look like for the Colts. This is the stretch where much of the Colts' roster will be shaped; while significant moves can happen up to the NFL trade deadline around Halloween, what general manager Chris Ballard does in free agency and the NFL Draft will reveal plenty about the makeup of the 2025 Colts.
Important Offseason Dates
Feb. 18-March 4: Period during which teams can place franchise or transition tag on impending free agents
Feb. 24-March 3: NFL Scouting Combine (Lucas Oil Stadium)
March 10 (noon)-March 12 (3:59 p.m.): Free agency negotiating period in which impending unrestricted free agents may enter negotiations – but not sign contracts – with other teams.
March 12 (4 p.m.): Start of the 2025 NFL league year.
March 12 (4 p.m.): Trades agreed to prior to the start of the new league year may be executed.
March 12 (4 p.m.): Unrestricted free agents may sign contracts with any team. The NFL's "first wave" of free agency usually begins to slow down by the first Friday of the new league year, which this year is March 14.
April 21: Teams with returning head coaches may begin their offseason workout programs. The Colts have not yet announced dates for their 2025 offseason program.
April 24-26: 2025 NFL Draft (Green Bay, Wisc.)
April 28: Unsigned unrestricted free agents who sign on or after this date do not count against the NFL's 2026 compensatory pick formula. The week or so after this date can sometimes see an uptick in free agency signings, usually of older veterans.
May 1: Deadline for teams to exercise fifth-year options on 2022 first-round draft picks (the Colts did not make a selection in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, so this does not apply to them).
May & June: Teams can hold a three-day rookie minicamp (on one of the first two weekends in May), as well as non-padded voluntary OTA practices and a mandatory veteran minicamp.
2025 NFL Draft
The Colts hold the following selections in the 2025 NFL Draft:
- First round (No. 14 overall)
- Second round
- Third round
- Fourth round
- Fifth round
- Sixth round
- Seventh round
The NFL will officially finalize the full 2025 NFL Draft order when compensatory selections in third through seventh rounds are awarded, which last year happened on the Monday before the new league year began. Per OverTheCap, the Colts are not projected to receive a comp pick in 2025.
