INDIANAPOLIS —The Indianapolis Colts today signed running back Jonathan Williams to the practice squad and waived running back Jeremy McNichols.
Williams, 6-0, 223 pounds, has played in 14 career games with the Buffalo Bills and New Orleans Saints. He has totaled 30 carries for 94 yards and one touchdown in addition to two receptions. Williams was selected by the Bills in the fifth round (156th overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft and rushed for 94 yards on 27 carries during his rookie season. He spent the majority of the 2017 campaign on the Denver Broncos practice squad before being signed by New Orleans on November 14. Williams played in three games for the Saints this year and registered three rushes and one reception.
In his collegiate career at Arkansas (2012-15), Williams totaled 2,321 rushing yards, 16 touchdowns, nine 100-yard games and a 5.7 yards per rush average. His missed the 2015 season due to an injury, but earned Associated Press All-SEC second-team honors as a junior after he compiled 211 carries for 1,190 yards and 12 touchdowns. Williams' rushing total in 2014 ranked eighth on the school's single season rushing list.
McNichols, 5-9, 205 pounds, was signed to the Colts practice squad at the start of the season and was elevated to the active roster on September 28. He participated in the team's Week 4 overtime loss against Houston and finished with two carries for four yards. McNichols has competed in three career games as a member of the Colts and San Francisco 49ers.
