INDIANAPOLIS – He's done putting on the jersey for Horseshoe.

But the blue and white Mathis has donned for all 14 of his NFL seasons has him longing for more.

The playing days for Mathis in Indianapolis are complete.

That doesn't mean the team's all-time sack leader will be alienating himself from the only franchise he ever knew in NFL.

"I think I have made it known that I definitely want to push my knowledge of pass rushing on to the younger players," Mathis says regarding his post-football plans. "Any shape, form or fashion that can be done, I am more than open to it."

Mathis isn't quite sure what that exact role, or when such an opportunity, would be after his playing life.

A coach, teaching the art of pass rushing from the perspective as one of the NFL's greatest?

A scout/consultant, evaluating film looking for the next small school gem?

"That is a bridge that we will cross a little later on once the smoke clears," Mathis said during locker room clean out day on Monday. "Definitely want to be around. This is my team and I love it."

The advisory role, compared to a coach, is more appealing to Mathis in trying to keep the "quarterback hating" alive with Indy pass rushers.

In case fans didn't realize just how much Mathis adores the city of Indianapolis take a listen to him mic'd up over the weekend.

When Mathis announced his retirement last Friday, he ended his opening statement with a direct message to the city of Indianapolis, tossing in there the hope to work for the organization again some day.

"I love you guys, Indy. This is my home," Mathis said. "I am a Colt, I am a blue blood, I am a brick-layer at Lucas Oil Stadium, all of that good stuff. I am here forever, it's a part of me, it's in my DNA. Anything that the Colts need of me, I will be here. You are not getting rid of me, trust me and believe me. I will be around. I will be knocking on the door as soon as the season is over. What do you have for me? I will be here."

"If I have to sneak in here I will."
