INDIANAPOLIS – On Tuesday, September 21, the Indianapolis Colts, Walgreens and La Plaza teamed up to provide a free flu shot clinic for individuals served by La Plaza, an Indianapolis community center that serves more than 7,000 Latino families every year. This clinic was designed to help educate the Hispanic community about the importance of getting a flu shot.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now recommends flu shots for everyone over the age of 6 months beginning in early September. Only one flu shot is required this season, as the 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against H1N1 as well as two other seasonal flu viruses.

Tuesday's clinic was also a part of the NFL's league-wide celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and featured Colts players David Caldwell and Joe Reitz. The players met with the clinic participants, signed autographs helped keep the participant's minds off of the little stick from the flu shot.

Walgreens stores from all over central Indiana sent representatives to La Plaza to distribute the flu shots. Their staff also provided free diabetes screenings at the clinic.

About Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Heritage Month is a special time and opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Hispanic players, coaches, front office staff and our fans. One of the distinguishing characteristics of football is the way it brings diverse groups of people together on a common ground. In serving our fans our goal is to fully engage all groups and help them experience the thrill of NFL football.

About La Plaza

La Plaza is a non-profit organization that serves more than 7,000 Central Indiana Latinos annually by providing families with access to essential, health and social services and educational programs. In addition, they provide opportunities for over 35,000 people annually to build understanding and appreciation of the Latino community through participation in a wide variety of cultural activities.
