INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts are proud to announce Karly Keiper, a functional skills teacher at Bremen High School in northern Indiana, as a 2016 honoree of the Colts Anthem Angels program, presented by Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Keiper will be recognized at the Colts home game this Sunday, October 30, 2016.
Keiper has made an impact on countless students' lives. Her nominator states, "teaching young adults is difficult enough, but teaching young adults with varying needs in one classroom can be quite challenging. She does it with respect, grace, and the ultimate, with a loving heart."
Students in Keiper's classroom vary in age and cognitive ability. Each day she works with her students to improve functional academic areas such as social skills, literacy, money management, time management, math, independent living and community integration.
Outside of teaching, Keiper coaches multiple Unified Sports teams, embracing the efforts of the joint IHSAA/Special Olympics Indiana project, which allows high school students with and without intellectual disabilities to collectively represent their high school on the same field in an official, sanctioned activity.
Keiper's nominator told the story of her son, Matthew, now thriving ever since working with Miss Keiper. Matthew worked with his teacher for three months for a philanthropic pageant. Through coaching, preparation and aiding Matthew on his talent portion, he was able to bring the audience to tears and cheers the night of his performance.
"The kids make my job easy," Keiper explained. "They are kind, funny, talented, intelligent and every bit as able to follow their dreams as anyone else." She believes in building her students' abilities rather than focusing on their disabilities.
For the kindness and devotion she displays to her students, we congratulate Anthem Angel Karly Keiper.
Keiper will receive four (4) VIP Club Seat Tickets to the Colts game, a feature story with her photo in the Colts gameday magazine (the Scout) and on www.colts.com, as well as on-field recognition at the game.
