INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts today signed free agents, defensive back Mike Newton and defensive end Justin Hickman.
Newton, 5-10, 197 pounds, was originally signed by the Colts as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2010. He competed in 12 games on special teams and as a reserve defensive back. Newton finished the season with six special teams tackles and contributed with one fumble recovery against Cincinnati (11/14). He missed the 2011 campaign and was placed on the Colts' Waived/Injured list on August 28.
Hickman, 6-0, 265 pounds, has spent the last three seasons (2009-11) as a member of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. He has recorded 144 tackles, 27.0 sacks and three fumble recoveries. Last season, Hickman started all 18 games and was named an East Division All-Star and CFL All-Star as he tied for the league lead with 13.0 sacks. He was also nominated for Most Outstanding Defensive Player.
After playing three seasons at UCLA (2004-06), Hickman signed with the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent on April 30, 2007. He was released by the Redskins following training camp.
