WESTFIELD, Ind. — Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich said today that quarterback Andrew Luck, who is working his way back from a calf strain, will continue to sit out the team's training camp practices this next week leading up to Thursday's preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills.
Reich confirmed Luck will not take part in the team's next three practices on Sunday through Tuesday before being re-evaluated lated in the week.
"(We'll) try to just ramp it up a little bit from (this) week," Reich told reporters after Saturday's practice at Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Ind. "But talking with him last night and this morning, I feel good about where we're at."
Luck aggravated the calf injury during the offseason and missed the entire on-field portion of OTAs and veteran minicamp. After taking part in two of the team's first three camp practices as a limited participant and still feeling some pain and discomfort in his calf, however, Luck and the Colts decided to keep the quarterback off the practice field for the time being.
Luck is still taking all the first-team reps during walkthroughs, and Reich said Saturday he's been able to add a little bit of mobility to his personal throwing sessions.
The key for now, Reich said, isn't necessarily rehabbing the injury, but getting the calf back to full strength.
"It's one thing to kind of be recovered from the injury, it's another thing to be back to full strength," Reich said. "And I think our goal is to kind of get him back to full strength."
Reich had indicated the plan prior to Luck's calf injury was to hold him out of the first and fourth preseason games. The Colts travel to take on the Bills on Thursday and will resume training camp practices in Westfield at 9 a.m. next Saturday.
