THE SKINNY:
With veteran starter Frank Gore signing a free agent deal with the Miami Dolphins this offseason, the Colts, under a new coaching staff, are taking a fresh approach to the running back position this season.
Gone is the "bell cow" approach, in which one back is depended on to take a lion's share of the carries; now Indy will utilize a "running back by committee" approach, in which several different players, all of whom bring different distinguishable strengths to the unit, will be put into the game at various points to help keep the opposing defense off balance.
Returning for a second year at the position is Marlon Mack, while seventh-year back Robert Turbin is now the veteran presence of the group, but there will certainly be some spots to win beyond those two players.
The team used two draft picks this year on running backs — Nyheim Hines in the fourth round, and Jordan Wilkins in the fifth round — while Christine Michael and Josh Ferguson are also hoping to make their presence felt.
