2017 Free Agent Watch: Outside Linebacker Chris Carter

Intro: We are less than two months away from the 2017 free agency beginning, so it’s time to analyze the nine unrestricted free agents for the Colts. Next up is outside linebacker Chris Carter.

INDIANAPOLIS – The Colts have five snaps of defensive film to go off of when evaluating free agent Chris Carter.

Back in October, the Colts signed Carter after he spent the first handful of games this past season with the Ravens.

Carter's role in Indianapolis was relegated to special teams. He played just a total of five defensive snaps in nine games with the Colts.

A lighter defensive load is how Carter has spent most of his six seasons in the NFL.

Playing with four teams since being a 2011 fifth-round pick, the 6-1 and 245-pound Carter is an unrestricted free agent.

A third of the Colts' nine UFAs in 2017 come from the outside linebacker position.

Carter, who will turn 28 years old later this year, is the Colts' only free agent outside linebacker under the age of 30.

If the Colts want to see Carter in a full off-season program, they should be able to bring him back without much of a cry from the outside market.

No matter how the Colts handle their outside linebackers entering free agency (Carter, Cole and Walden) should not push down the need to find one come draft time.
