The Indianapolis Colts finished the 2016 season with an 8-8 record, were 3-3 within the AFC South Division and sent two players to the Pro Bowl in wide receiver T.Y. Hilton and punter Pat McAfee.

The 2016 season saw the return of quarterback Andrew Luck, who missed nine games in 2015. Luck returned to form and ranked in the Top 10 in the league in passing yards (4,240, eighth), passing touchdowns (31, fifth) and quarterback rating (96.4, ninth).

Hilton set new single-season career highs in receptions (91) and receiving yards (1,448) as he became the first Colts player to lead the NFL in receiving yards since Reggie Wayne in 2007. It marked just the eighth time in team history that a Colts player led the league in receiving. Hiltonalso added six receiving touchdowns while earning his third consecutive (2014-16) Pro Bowl nod.

Running back Frank Gore rushed for 1,025 yards and four touchdowns, as he became the first Colts running back since Joseph Addai in 2007 to rush for 1,000 yards and the eighth running back in team history. Gore also joined joined Pro Football Hall of Famers Emmitt Smith (11), Curtis Martin (10), Walter Payton (10) and Barry Sanders (10) as the only players in NFL history to rush for 1,000 yards in nine different seasons. He became the first running back at the age of 33 or older to rush for 1,000 yards since John Riggins in 1984 and just the fourth player overall.

Defensively, outside linebacker Erik Walden ranked tied for eighth in the league (tied for fourth in the AFC) with 11.0 sacks. It marked the first time in his career that he recorded double-digit sacks in a single season. Walden was one of six linebackers in the NFL to record 11.0 or more sacks and three or more forced fumbles this year.

The 2016 season also saw the end of an era as outside linebacker Robert Mathis concluded his 14-year career for Indianapolis. Mathis tallied 5.0 sacks this season and finished first in franchise history in sacks (123.0) and 17th in league history. He holds the NFL record for career sack-forced fumbles (47).

On special teams, kicker Adam Vinatieri converted 27-of-31 field goals and 44 PATs for 125 points. Vinatieri connected on 25 consecutive field goals to end the 2015 season and made his first 19 field goals of the 2016 season to set a new NFL record for consecutive field goals made (44). McAfee led the league in punting average (49.3) and ranked third in net punting average (42.7). His punting average set a new Colts single season record as he earned his second career Pro Bowl selection (2014 and 2016).
