Attended Westlake High School in Austin, Texas and finished as the school's all-time leader in total yards (9,886) and passing yards (7,491).

As a junior, he led Westlake to the state championship game and earned Offensive Player of the Year accolades after he tallied 4,041 passing yards and 1,325 rushing yards.
