Indianapolis ranked fifth in the NFL in tackles for loss (94.0) and sacks (51.0), while finishing tied for fifth in forced fumbles (17.0) in 2023. The Colts also ranked fourth in opponent negative play yards (-512). The team recorded 14 consecutive games with a takeaway to open the season, which was the longest streak in the NFL in 2023.
The Colts had four players record at least 8.0 sacks in 2023, including defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, defensive end Samson Ebukam, defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo and defensive end Kwity Paye. They were the only team in the NFL to have four-such players last season. Indianapolis' 51.0 sacks were the most by the Colts in the Indianapolis era (since 1984). Buckner was named to his third career Pro Bowl. Raich guided Odeyingbo to a career year, recording single-season career highs in numerous defensive categories, including tackles (38), solo tackles (22), tackles for loss (9.0), sacks (8.0), passes defensed (two), forced fumbles (two) and fumble recoveries (two).
In 2022, Indianapolis finished in the top 10 in the league in sacks (44 – tied-10th), tackles for loss (91 – fifth), forced fumbles (13 – tied-eighth), fumble recoveries (11 – tied-fourth), opponent negative plays (31 – fifth), third down percentage (37.95 – 10th) and opponent three-and-out percentage (22.3 – eighth). The unit's 44 sacks were the most in franchise history since 2005 (46).
The Colts defense received significant contributions from defensive tackles Grover Stewart and Buckner. Stewart recorded single-season career highs in tackles (70), solo tackles (44), tackles for loss (9.0), sacks (4.0), passes defensed (three) and fumble recoveries (one). Buckner totaled 74 tackles (44 solo), 11.0 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Among NFL defensive tackles, Stewart and Buckner each ranked in the top five in total tackles (Buckner – tied-second; Stewart – tied-fourth) and solo tackles (Buckner and Stewart – tied-second). Buckner (third) and Stewart (fifth) each ranked in the top five in total tackles by a defensive tackle in single-season franchise history. It marked the first time since 1994 that the Colts had two defensive tackles register at least 70 tackles each in a single season.
Additionally, defensive end Yannick Ngakoue led the team with 9.5 sacks. Raich worked with second-year defensive ends Paye (10.0 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks) and Odeyingbo (5.0 tackles for loss and 5.0 sacks), who each established then-single-season career highs in tackles for loss and sacks.
In 2021, the Colts finished second in the league with 33 takeaways. The team tied for the league high in fumble recoveries (14) and tied for third in interceptions (19). Raich helped Buckner earn his second career Pro Bowl selection. Buckner became the first Indianapolis defensive tackle to lead the team in sacks in back-to-back seasons since 1982 (when sacks became an official statistic). Raich also worked with Paye, whom the team selected in the first round (21st overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft. Paye started all 15 games he played in and registered 32 tackles (16 solo), 3.0 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries en route to being named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team.
In 2020, Raich helped Indianapolis reach the playoffs with an 11-5 regular season record. He assisted with a Colts defense that finished in the top 10 in numerous categories, including total defense (332.1 yards per game – eighth), rush defense (90.5 yards per game – second), interception rate (2.67 – eighth), takeaways (25 – tied-fifth), first downs allowed per game (20.6 – eighth), goal to go percentage (70.0 – tied-ninth), points per game allowed (22.6 –  tied-10th) and safeties (three – tied-first). It marked the first time since 1971 that the Colts finished in the top five in run defense and the first time since 2007 that Indianapolis ranked in the top 10 in total defense.
Pivotal to Indianapolis' success against the run was the performance of the interior defensive line spearheaded by defensive tackles Buckner and Stewart. In his first season with the Colts, Buckner totaled 58 tackles (37 solo), 10.0 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, three passes defensed, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. Among NFL defensive tackles, he ranked in the top-five in tackles (fourth), solo tackles (second), tackles for loss (tied-third), sacks (second) and forced fumbles (tied-third). Buckner established a single-season franchise record for most sacks by a defensive tackle. He became just the third defensive tackle in team history to be named Associated Press First Team All-Pro, joining Art Donovan (1954-57) and Gene Lipscomb (1958-59). Stewart had a career year as he registered career highs in total tackles (53), solo tackles (40) and tackles for loss (6.0) while adding half a sack and one pass defensed. Among defensive tackles, he led the league in solo tackles and tied for ninth in total tackles.
At defensive end, Justin Houston compiled 25 tackles (19 solo), 8.0 tackles for loss, 8.0 sacks, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries while Denico Autry tallied 33 tackles (20 solo), 9.0 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. Raich assisted third-year defensive tackle/defensive end Tyquan Lewis to a career year as he recorded 24 tackles (19 solo), 8.0 tackles for loss, 4.0 sacks and two passes defensed (all career highs).
Prior to Indianapolis, Raich served as the co-defensive coordinator/linebackers coach for the St. Louis BattleHawks of the XFL in 2020.
In 2018, Raich was a defensive assistant/assistant defensive line coach with the Cincinnati Bengals. Defensive tackle Geno Atkins was named to the Pro Bowl after registering a team-high 10.0 sacks, which ranked sixth among NFL defensive tackles that season. The Bengals also received contributions from defensive end Carlos Dunlap, who finished with 8.0 sacks. Raich tutored rookie defensive end Sam Hubbard, who finished third on the team with 6.0 sacks.
Raich served on the Detroit Lions' coaching staff as defensive assistant/defensive ends coach (2015-17) and defensive quality control coach (2014). From 2014-17, the Lions defense ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in total yards per game (340.3, 10th), rushing yards per game (100.3, eighth) and number of games in which opponents were held to 20 points or less (34, tied for sixth).
In 2017, Raich helped Detroit rank third in the NFL in takeaways (32), tie for second in fumble recoveries (13) and tie for fifth in turnover differential (plus-10). In 2016, the Lions defense tied for second in the NFL by holding opponents to 21 points or less in 10 games. In Raich's first season with an official focus on the defensive ends, Detroit's defense compiled 43 sacks (seventh in the NFL) and 98.0 tackles for losses. He also helped guide defensive end Ezekiel Ansah to his first-career Pro Bowl berth and a career-high 14.5 sacks (third in the NFL). In 2014, Raich helped the Lions finish second in the league in total defense (300.9 yards per game) and third in scoring defense (17.6). The unit also ranked first in the NFL in rush defense, and their average yield of only 69.3 yards was the ninth-best opponent per-game rushing average in NFL history.
In 2013, Raich was the linebackers coach at Duquesne.
From 2007-2012, Raich coached with the Arizona Cardinals. He was the linebackers coach for four seasons (2009-2012) after serving as a defensive assistant for two years (2007-08). In his six seasons in Arizona, Raich helped a Cardinals linebacker reach 100-plus tackles in a single season five times. He notably worked with defensive end Bertrand Berry, linebacker Karlos Dansby and linebacker Joey Porter. In 2008, Raich helped the Cardinals to a Super Bowl appearance.
Prior to Arizona, Raich began his NFL career with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he served as an offensive assistant (2004-06) and player personnel intern (2002-03). He was part of the Steelers' Super Bowl XL championship team.
Prior to the NFL, Raich coached at the collegiate level for nine years at Robert Morris (2000-02, 1996-98), Glenville State (1999) and his alma mater, Westminster (Pa.) College (1993-94). In 1999, he was also the defensive coordinator for the Hildesheim Invaders of the former German Federal League.
Raich played linebacker from 1989-92 at Westminster (Pa.) College, where he finished his collegiate career as the leading tackler in school history, earning three NAIA All-America Awards. His Westminster teams won 42-of-48 games, including the NAIA National Championship in 1989.
