Turner enters his second season with the Colts as quarterbacks coach. He has 14 years of coaching experience, including 11 seasons in the NFL.
In 2023, Indianapolis finished in the top 10 in the NFL in points per game (23.3 – tied-10th) and rushing yards per game (121.1 – 10th). Turner worked with rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson, whom the Colts selected in the first round (fourth overall) of the 2023 NFL Draft. Richardson started all four games he saw action in and completed 50-of-84 passes for 577 yards with three touchdowns and one interception for an 87.3 passer rating. He also added 25 carries for 136 yards and four touchdowns.
After losing Richardson to a season-ending injury in Week 5, veteran Gardner Minshew II took over the starting role. Minshew II completed 305-of-490 passes for a single-season career-high 3,305 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions for an 84.6 passer rating. He also registered 34 carries for 100 yards and three touchdowns. Minshew II was named to his first career Pro Bowl.
Prior to Indianapolis, Turner worked with the Arizona Cardinals for five seasons in a variety of roles, including co-pass game coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2022), quarterbacks coach (2021), offensive assistant/assistant quarterbacks (2019-20) and offensive assistant (2018).
In 2022, Turner worked with quarterback Kyler Murray, who started 11 games and completed 259-of-390 passes for 2,368 yards and 14 touchdowns with seven interceptions for an 87.2 passer rating before suffering a season-ending injury. Wide receiver Marquise Brown tallied 67 receptions for 709 yards and three touchdowns in his first season in Arizona.
From 2019-21, Turner worked with the quarterbacks and helped Murray earn Pro Bowl honors in back-to-back seasons (2020-21). He also became the first player in NFL history to compile at least 70 passing touchdowns and 20 rushing touchdowns in his first three seasons.
Turner guided Murray to a single-season franchise record in completion percentage (69.2 percent) in 2021 after he completed 333-of-481 passes for 3,787 yards and 24 touchdowns with 10 interceptions for a single-season career-high 100.6 passer rating.
In 2020, Murray completed 375-of-558 passes for a single-season career-high 3,971 yards and 26 touchdowns with 12 interceptions. He also set single-season quarterback franchise records in rushing yards (819) and rushing touchdowns (11).
In 2019, Turner mentored Murray, who was named the Associated Press NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after he completed 349-of-542 passes for 3,722 yards and 20 touchdowns with 12 interceptions for an 87.4 passer rating. He also added 93 carries for 544 yards and four touchdowns. Murray set rookie single-season franchise records in completions, attempts, passing yards, touchdown passes and 300-yard passing games (five). He was just the sixth quarterback in NFL history and second rookie in NFL history to eclipse at least 3,500 passing yards and 500 rushing yards in a single season.
Prior to Arizona, Turner spent three seasons with the Carolina Panthers as their assistant quarterbacks coach (2017) and assistant wide receivers coach (2015-16).
Turner guided Cam Newton to 28 total touchdowns in 2017 after he completed 291-of-492 passes for 3,302 yards and 22 touchdowns with 16 interceptions as well as 139 carries for 754 yards and six touchdowns.
In 2016, Turner worked with Kelvin Benjamin, who tallied a team-high seven receiving touchdowns while also adding 63 receptions for 941 yards after he played in all 16 games in his first season back after suffering a season-ending injury in 2015.
He was part of a Panthers staff in 2015 that helped lead them to Super Bowl 50. Turner assisted an offense that set single-season franchise records in total points (500), touchdowns (59) and first downs (357). He guided wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. to 44 receptions for 739 yards and a single-season career-high 10 receiving touchdowns. Ginn Jr. became the first Carolina wide receiver with at least 10 touchdowns in a season since Steve Smith in 2005 (12). Turner also mentored rookie wide receiver Devin Funchess, who contributed 31 receptions for 473 yards and five touchdowns. His five receiving touchdowns rank second in rookie single-season franchise history.
He spent two seasons (2013-14) as the quarterbacks and wide receivers coach at Florida International after serving as the assistant to the head coach with the Minnesota Vikings for two seasons (2011-12). While in Minnesota, he worked with Leslie Frazier and supported the coaching staff by compiling research projects, coordinating schedules and travel itineraries and assisting with practice and game preparation.
Turner began his career as the wide receivers/special teams coach at his alma mater, The Citadel. He also served as the school's team liaison for academic and military issues.
His father, Ron, was a head coach collegiately at San Jose State (1992) and Illinois (1997-2004). He also coached in the NFL with Chicago (1993-96), Indianapolis (2010-11), Tampa Bay (2012) and Carolina (2017). Turner's brother, Morgan, currently is the tight ends coach at Arkansas.
He played quarterback and wide receiver for The Citadel (2006-09). Turner played three seasons as a quarterback before injuring his shoulder and switching to wide receiver for his last season. He majored in business administration.
Turner and his wife, Janie, have three daughters, Charliejane, Luella and Livie.
