Tanney enters his second season with the Colts as the team's passing game coordinator. He previously served in a variety of roles with the Philadelphia Eagles, including quarterbacks coach (2023), assistant quarterbacks/offensive assistant (2022) and offensive quality control (2021) following his nine-year NFL playing career (2012-20).
In 2024, the Colts ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in rushing yards per game (137.1 – eighth). Second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson started 11 games and completed 126-of-264 passes for 1,814 yards with eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He set franchise single-season records in rushing yards (499) and rushing touchdowns (six) by a quarterback. Richardson registered four games with a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown, which tied for the third-most such games in 2024. He also tied for the third-most rushing touchdowns among quarterbacks. Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco saw action in eight games (six starts) and completed 162-of-248 passes for 1,761 yards with 12 touchdowns and seven interceptions.
Wide receivers Josh Downs (72 receptions for 803 yards and five touchdowns), Michael Pittman Jr. (69 receptions for 808 yards and three touchdowns) and Alec Pierce (37 receptions for 824 yards and seven touchdowns) became the first trio in the NFL since 2021 to each record 800 receiving yards in a single season. It marked the first time the Colts had three players eclipse 800 receiving yards in a single season since 2004 (Marvin Harrison, Brandon Stokley and Reggie Wayne). Pierce led the NFL in average yards per reception (22.3), while registering career highs in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.
During the 2023 season, Tanney helped the Philadelphia offense rank second in the NFL in 10-play drives (39) and two-minute offense points (33), third in third down conversion percentage (48.0) and fourth in first downs made (377). He mentored quarterback Jalen Hurts, who started all 17 games and completed 352-of-538 passes for 3,858 yards and 23 touchdowns with 15 interceptions. Hurts set new single-season career highs in completions, passing yards and passing touchdowns. He also added 157 carries for 605 yards and a single-season career-high 15 touchdowns. Among NFL quarterbacks, Hurts ranked first in carries, third in rushing yards and tied for first in rushing touchdowns.
In 2022, Tanney worked with an Eagles offense that finished in the top 10 in numerous categories, including yards per game (389.1 – third), points per game (28.1 – third), rushing yards per game (147.6 – fifth), passing yards per game (241.5 – ninth), fewest turnovers (19 – tied-fifth), first downs per game (22.6 – third), third down percentage (franchise-record 45.95 percent – fourth), fourth down percentage (68.75 percent – fourth), red zone percentage (67.80 percent – third), goal to go percentage (82.35 percent – fifth), points scored on their first offensive possession (62 – first) and plays of 10+ yards (253 – second). The Eagles were one of just two teams to finish in the top 10 in rushing yards per game and passing yards per game.
Tanney worked with Hurts, who set then single-season career highs in every passing category, including completions (306), passing yards (3,701), passing touchdowns (22), completion percentage (66.5) and passer rating (101.5). Hurts also registered 784 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns. He became just the eighth quarterback in NFL history to register 3,000 passing yards and 750 rushing yards in a season. Hurts also became the youngest Eagles quarterback to ever start in a playoff game.
Prior to his coaching career, Tanney played quarterback in the NFL for nine seasons with the New York Giants (2018-20), Tennessee Titans (2014-15, 2015-17), Colts (2015), Buffalo Bills (2015), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2014), Cleveland Browns (2013), Dallas Cowboys (2013) and Kansas City Chiefs (2012).
