HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on DB-Bob Sanders)
"Bob Sanders has a high ankle sprain, and is kind of similar to (WR) Roy Hall. Roy Hall had an injury that was going to keep him out for a couple of weeks and he ended up getting his knee scoped during that time. Hopefully, we'll have Roy back fully ready to go after the bye. I know Bob was going to consult with our doctors and with a second-opinion doctor on whether he should get his knee scoped or not, but he's going to miss some time with a high ankle sprain. How much that is, we'll have to see. (DT) Keyunta Dawson was supposed to be out with a high ankle sprain and he told me he's practicing (Wednesday), so we'll see."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on if knee surgery would have Sanders out longer)
"I don't think so. I think that's what they're looking at, 'How long is he realistically going to be out with this high ankle sprain?' If he is going to miss two or three weeks, then it would make sense to go ahead and have the knee surgery. If not, he could play on it, so we'll see what happens."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on what happened to Sanders)
"I really don't know. He got rolled up in a pile some way and got his ankle rolled on."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on who replaces Sanders)
"It's probably going to be Melvin Bullitt. Melvin played the fourth quarter of the ( Minnesota) game and did a good job in there. We actually played a little bit better, with the team effort, I don't know that Melvin played better than Bob did, but we stopped (Vikings RB-Adrian) Peterson a little bit better in that fourth quarter."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on what Bullitt brings to the defense)
"Melvin's a tough guy. He has athleticism and he's smart. He's learning his game and he'll do a good job."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on if playing young players makes you change things)
"You really don't change a lot. You may simplify a little bit and maybe not do quite as much when you have a lot of young guys in there, but we've been in this situation before. We were in it quite a bit last year. We have some good experience from last year having to play games with seven or eight guys that couldn't go. That's why you have 53 players and that's why you have training camp, to try to develop those guys and find out who can do it for you. The guys, normally when they get a chance, they step in and they do pretty well."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on how important it is to see OL improvement this week)
"Part of offensive line play is you are working with four other guys. It's calls and communication. Nobody can really block people one-on-one. You have to know where your help is and where you can expect help from. That's part of making those calls and being on the same page, and that's what these young guys will benefit from. They're not going to all of a sudden become stronger or faster or bigger, but knowing a little bit more about what's going on and who you are playing with does help in the offensive line."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on similarities in the injuries to the Colts and Jaguars OL)
"You see it in the stats, where you have four really, really quality backs who are averaging under three yards a carry. I think you could have made a ton of money if you would have said at this point in time Joseph Addai, Maurice Jones-Drew, Fred Taylor and Dominic Rhodes wouldn't be able to average three yards a carry. I think it definitely has to have something to do with that, but we have to find a way to get ours fixed and I'm sure they're the same way."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on how crucial it is for the Colts to cut down on penalties)
"We need to fix that. There's no way you can just spot people 15 yards on returns or you can get a 25-yard return nullified. We had a return out to the 47-yard line in the first game that ended up being back at the 10 because of a penalty. In close games, that's really, really hard to overcome. We have to eliminate that and it's something we are going to work on and stress."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on if the early bye week is beneficial due to injuries)
"We were complaining about it when the schedule came out, but maybe it's the Lord's way of looking out for us and taking care of us. It's going to come at a good time. Especially if we can get a win and get some of these guys healed up, it'll look like it's coming at the perfect time."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on how different Jacksonville is with new Defensive Coordinator Gregg Williams)
"Not a whole lot different from what we've seen in their first two games. They're very physical. They still rely on big defensive linemen inside. They play a sound cover-four, cover-two type shell where they don't let you get a lot of big plays. You have to move the ball down the field in manageable chunks and it looks very similar to what they've been doing. They are well-coached and they play very aggressively. They tackle well and fly around. It looks very similar."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on the play where OT-Ryan Diem was flagged for being an ineligible receiver downfield)
"You can't be more than one yard downfield until the ball is thrown, no matter if it's behind the line of scrimmage or not. If you look at it, it's very, very questionable whether it was a good call, but it is one that there have been a lot of infractions of linemen downfield. More people are throwing these screens. More people are throwing passes on running plays. They call running plays and rather than have the quarterback audible out of it if the defense isn't right, they just throw a quick pass. We've seen a lot of linemen downfield. People are complaining about it, so it's kind of been a point of emphasis. Whether that was a good call or not probably depends on which team you were on. Minnesota thinks it was a good call, we don't."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on if OL have a clock in their head for those plays)
"On the screens, you do. You count and you expect it to be on time. That's why they give you one yard. They give you a little bit of leeway. Whether Ryan was more than a yard downfield, I don't think so, but it was called and we got a penalty on it."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on if the way they won was good for the team's psyche to know they can score quickly)
"I think we always know that. I think it was good for some of our young guys, not the way that we won it in the fact that we got some quick strikes, but the fact that we played a game that for three-and-a-half quarters we didn't do much effectively. We hung in there and we continued to fight and I think our young guys saw that games are never over and you have to play all the way through. Most of our veteran guys understand that. We've been in a lot of those kinds of games. From that standpoint, I was really happy that the young guys got to see that."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on being animated after DT-Darrell Reid's 15-yard penalty)
"I was probably animated in a lot of ways. It was a penalty and should have been called and it's one that we just have to avoid. I didn't see Darrell's hit at the time. I saw (PR) Justin Forsett get tackled. First of all, there was no white border. I asked the officials about that before the game. We're always supposed to have a white border in an NFL game and there wasn't one. We had talked a little bit about that before the game, and Justin Forsett got tackled outside of what would have been the white border and then Darrell Reid hit a guy that would have been in the white border, so we were discussing the painting on the field and how it's supposed to be lined."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on DT-LaJuan Ramsey)
"LaJuan Ramsey played about 12 plays. He did a pretty good job. There were some new things for him, but he's adjusting well. Our system is very much like he played at USC, but unlike what he played as a professional in San Francisco and Philadelphia. He's getting back to it. I think he's going to help us down the road. I would expect him to play a little bit more this week."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on if he sees a difference in Jacksonville QB-David Garrard this year)
"Not really, other than the fact that they haven't had their running game going as well as it went last year. That makes it tougher on any quarterback. I felt, especially against Buffalo, they're trying to win and he's making some great plays running, scrambling around, making first downs when it looked impossible and doing a lot of things that he did last year. I haven't seen a whole lot of difference."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on if getting Jeff Saturday back automatically stabilizes the OL)
"That's the fallacy of everything. 'If Bob Sanders plays, all of a sudden the run defense is going to be fine. If Jeff plays everything's going to be fine. When Marvin gets back we'll start throwing the ball fine.' Whoever is in there has to play. You can't look for one guy to save the franchise. We all have to play a little bit better on the offensive line. We all have to pick up the slack and get our run defense better and you can't just rely on one guy. Does it help to have Pro-Bowl guys in there? Yes, no question."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on how the OL will set up if Saturday is back)
"I don't know. We'll look at all that. Jamey (Richard) has practiced more at center, but he did a fantastic job in the two games that he played. He played really well. If Jeff is back, (Richard) will get some work at guard and we'll see what happens. Steve (Justice) went in and did a good job, too. He's playing against Kevin Williams. That's a tall order and he hung in there."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (on WR-Anthony Gonzalez)
"Anthony is doing what we thought he would do. He has gotten to the point where he is looking at defenses and seeing what's going on and making route adjustments and not really just worrying about his assignment. He's able to anticipate because he's seeing what's going on and is a real studious guy. Just being around Peyton (Manning) for another year has been good for him. He's an excellent receiver and he fits right in to what we do."
