Saturday a.m. Quotes

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- Mike Newton’s three interceptions) “He’s one of those guys who has a knack for showing up.

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- Mike Newton's three interceptions) * *

"He's one of those guys who has a knack for showing up. He was like that in college and was certainly opportunistic, and he certainly proved to be that way today."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- whether he was satisfied with the practice)

"It certainly wasn't perfect. We had a lot of good things, but we have a lot of things we need to work on as well, but that's kind of why we do it. You kind of go through the exercise to get a sense of the flow of the game and you'll maybe work on some things, maybe something will pop up, that maybe you haven't anticipated, like we had a little substitution error at the end of our substitution period. Those little things make a difference."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- of anyone stood out in particular)

"I think overall we're making very good progress. It's been a very fine week, and we'll take a look at the film and kind of get a gauge on who's done what. That's usually a little bit better way to assess things."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- solid defense this week)

"Yes, the defense has played well. They've been certainly moving to the ball, running extremely well. They've been doing things well the entire camp, and offense has been doing some things well also. It's been one of those things that has been up-and-down, but our consistency level is improving. We just got a lot of work to do."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- any health issues)

"At this point we don't have anything we would say. Obviously we're not quite certain, a couple of guys got hurt yesterday, had a little tweak here and there, but we're not quite certain how long they're going to be out. There's still that evaluation process. So we'll make that determination in the next couple days."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- Charlie Johnson)

"I know he sprained his foot, but obviously we're not quite certain the length of time or anything like that."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- Andy Alleman)

"He tweaked his back a little bit. He kind of got caught in an odd position. He's also been evaluated and we'll know in the next 24 hours."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- Ryan Diem missing practice)

"He had a baby. He and his wife had a child Friday. So I know they're excited about that. We're happy for them."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- Commissioner Roger Goodell being in)

"The commissioner has certainly been traveling around from place to place. I think he told me this is number 11 in terms of the camps he's visited. He came in and had the opportunity to speak with both our players and our staff, and it's always good to have those guys come down from the NFL office. He's a great guy and he's interested in what the teams are doing in the league, so he gets around and makes certain he knows what's going on at the grass-roots level. So we appreciate that."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- 18 game regular season)

"Right now I'm not really concerned about it to be honest with you. Because of the fact that I know right now we have 16, and that's the way it's going to be for the time (being). Let me give you my take on it. It's very difficult with 16 games to try and get guys through the entire season, in terms of injuries and things of that nature, so there are certainly a number of things that are going to have to go into it as far as thought process. There are very smart men in those offices, and I'm sure they'll look at every angle and also that we have some safety issues covered as well."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- increasing roster size if they increase number of games)

"I'm not certain what they'll do in that regard, but that certainly (is) on the table. There's no question about that."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on- having Super Bowl here in 2012)

"We fully anticipate (that) obviously, but I can't tell the future. I really can't. That's a question that's not up to me. We'll wait and see what happens."

LB- GARY BRACKETT (on –On Mike Newton's three picks)

"You can't beat that. The best thing about it is you have to take advantage of the opportunities and come up with the big plays. He took advantage of the opportunities. I'm proud of him. You can't beat that hat trick your first time out here. Good job for him."

LB- GARY BRACKETT (on –meeting with commissioner Roger Goodell)

"It was good. He (Goodell) came out to express what is going on with everything in the league, making it a safer league, wanting to grow our game and obviously mentioning how the CBA is going. He just wanted to make sure the owners, from his point of view, and the players were on the same page."

LB- GARY BRACKETT (on –if he liked what he heard from Roger Goodell)

"I think it is a work in progress. I think there is a lot of stuff still to be figured out."

LB- GARY BRACKETT (on –if players are starting to save some money)

"I think obviously with the lockout looming. That was mentioned to us two years ago, to prepare for that. You just want to take care of yourself. I think just because of the bankruptcy rate of NFL players to begin with, you should want to save money. But with everything else going on with the talks of a potential lockout, guys are taking it upon themselves to save even more money. I think that will continue even when we continue to play football. We can get away from the days where guys play and they are bankrupt in three or four years after they are finished. Obviously, financial awareness and some type of plan is something you can carry on long after this game is over."

LB- GARY BRACKETT - (on- how the defense did in the scrimmage)

"I think we did good. Obviously we still have to go back and look at film. I think it's funny. It's never as good as you think when you go back and watch film. On the offensive part, it's never as bad either. So I think those guys had a couple of long drives. Obviously they had some plays with tipped balls and Mike (Newton) did a great job of taking advantage of some opportunities. Overall, I think we both got better out here today."

LB- GARY BRACKETT (on –going home today)

"I'm a newlywed. So, I am going home to see my wife and little girl."

DB- MELVIN BULLITT (on –getting through training camp)

"A lot of guys are healthy and that is good. If you look around the league there are a lot of people who are missing from training camp. Fortunately we haven't had that problem. We have had everybody at practice getting a lot of reps in and that can only help us get better and get to where we want to go."

DB- MELVIN BULLITT (on –if Commissioner Goodell seemed knowledgeable about the player questions)

"He was very knowledgeable. He was very informative as to what was going on. It is just a situation where we have to get it done. We have to make sure football keeps going and everybody stays happy. I think it will happen. This is America's game right now and we just have to keep this whole football thing together."

JEFF SATURDAY (on- Commissioner Goodell coming to talk to team)

"He talked about how much you've done in the past and how long you've been working with the league, gave a general description of what he was doing, and he had a couple topics that he wanted to address. He talked about player safety and what players were thinking; just asked guys' thoughts. Then he opened it up for questions and answer and we touched on a lot of the issues. It wasn't a negotiation. It was just getting information out."

JEFF SATURDAY (on- if he liked what he heard)

"I was really happy with what I heard from the players. I was really happy with the questions they asked. I thought they asked really informed questions. We've tried to get as much information to them as possible and I thought they did a really good job of asking tough questions to the Commissioner. The players were spot on with what they were trying to get accomplished."
