COLTS PRESIDENT BILL POLIAN and HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY– ON DRAFTING DT-VINCENT BURNS AND THE FIRST DAY OF DRAFT
PRESIDENT BILL POLIAN (On drafting Vincent Burns) Saturday, April 23, 2005
"We selected Vincent "Sweet Pea" Burns from the Universityof Kentucky. It was our third pick. We are excited to get him. We had him targeted right from the outset. We had some opportunities to trade out, but didn't want to because we really feel he's a guy that fits our system perfectly. He's 6-0, 267 pounds and runs a 4.8 forty. He's similar in build as (Dwight) Freeney. He doesn't have that blinding speed, but plenty good enough. We can play with six feet defensive linemen. We're thrilled to have him. He brings energy and excitement to the position, by evidence of the fact that he led the SEC in tackles for loss. He switched schemes this year. He was in a 3-4 defense, in which he's clearly not suited for. He'll be perfect for this scheme."
PRESIDENT BILL POLIAN (On drafting all defense the first day of the draft) Saturday, April 23, 2005
"Since we've been working together, this is one we've clearly targeted some defensive people and it broke right for us. Let's hope it stays that way for us on Sunday. It's an equally important day and we have some key people targeted and we hope it breaks that way for us."
PRESIDENT BILL POLIAN (On not trading on first day of the draft) Saturday, April 23, 2005
"No, we haven't traded yet. We were tempted in a couple of cases, but decided to stay with the board."
PRESIDENT BILL POLIAN (On moving up in the second round) Saturday, April 23, 2005
"We had some chances to move up, but it was really early and the price was too dear because as you know we have four picks in the first two rounds on Sunday and we felt like we didn't want to sacrifice those picks because we have some people targeted there."
PRESIDENT BILL POLIAN (On the first day) Saturday, April 23, 2005
"We said if we could come out of the first day with these three players that we selected, then it'd been a heck of a first day."
PRESIDENT BILL POLIAN (On the three players taken today) Saturday, April 23, 2005
"One of the things that was appealing to me about the players we took was if you got into emergency situations when injuries became a problem for you, and they were sufficiently verse in playing in the NFL, you could switch them. (Vincent) Burnes could play end or tackle and the two corners could play corner or safety. That's a very valuable commodity from the prospective of a general manager. These three guys also make your specials teams better."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (On drafting Vincent Burns) Saturday, April 23, 2005
"He is another guy that plays with high energy. He plays with suddenness. He just brings some movement and some striking ability to our defense. He's just what we are looking for."
HEAD COACH TONY DUNGY (On playing Burns) Saturday, April 23, 2005
"We're going to try him at tackle first. I think he has a lot of "John Randle" type ability and characteristics. He can play left end, but I think our first thought is to try him at tackle."
