"There is no question, we've put ourselves in a hole by not getting it done last week. We've got our first home game, playing at night, those are all great things, but it's important for us to have a good week of preparation. We've got some things that we need to improve on, and we need to do it this week. Hopefully, we can carry that onto the field on Sunday. We're playing a very good team, as well."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on what it is like to see his brother, Eli, in an NFL game)
"It's a different feeling. It's a different feeling for both of us. I'll be playing against their defense, which I'm not very familiar with. It really is a pretty unfamiliar opponent. They've had a lot of changes since we played them four years ago, including a new defensive coordinator, which you saw against Carolina. They brought out some things that they had not shown in the preseason. Anytime you see a new coordinator it takes, I think, four, five, six weeks to get a feel for what he really is all about. He is an excellent coach and you can see that he has so many more weapons in New York than he had in Buffalo, and he is using those weapons. That will be the biggest challenge. Certainly, I know Eli and I are both glad this thing was week two. Four years ago it was the first week of the season and talked about it all preseason during training camp. Now, it's week two, we'll just have to talk about it one week. There is no question that it is an honor and a privilege to be on the same field as your younger brother. It's a special situation."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on what it's like to have DE-Dwight Freeney chasing after his brother)
"It evens out because (DE-Justin) Tuck and DE-Osi (Umenyiora), those guys get their chance as well. I think once Eli was drafted and you started doing the math, we knew this would be an every four-year thing. I hope to make it to that 2014 game. I'll probably be out of eligibility by the time 2018 comes around. It's unique. I think we try to enjoy it. There is no question it's an important game for both teams. (The) Giants are coming off a big win, we're coming off a disappointing loss. I think it will be a really good ballgame."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on how similar does he think Eli and him are)
"I think pretty similar. Certainly, I think both of us have our strengths and both of us know certain things we don't do as well and what we have to do to compensate for that. Eli has great presence in the pocket. I didn't see the offensive film, but I saw the highlights, the couple touchdowns he threw the other day he kind of got away from pressure and got out of the pocket and made good throws on the run. That is something he has always done well. Our defense is going to have a challenge, and offensively we know we have to score points because their offense is going to score points."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the relationship between him and Eli and if it was different than his relationship with his older brother Cooper)
"Yes, just growing up, being five years younger, it just wasn't the same as it was with your brother that is two years older. But Eli and I are very close, as are Cooper and I still. We're all very close and get along. Somebody was asking me earlier, 'What do you all compete in?', and we really just don't do that very much because we aren't together that much. I mean this will be the only time I will see him all fall, it will be the five-minute conversation I get to have with him before the game and four of the minutes I'll be telling the cameras to get away so I can talk to my brother without being mic-ed. The times you are together, they are pretty rare, so we just enjoy each other's company, same with my older brother, as well. In golf, we usually play together, we usually partner. We don't trash talk. We just like being around each other because it is pretty rare when it happens."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on four years ago seeing Eli at the game and it setting in that he and his brother were going to be facing each other as starting quarterbacks in the NFL)
"I can't tell you until Sunday, but I remember seeing him before the game and remember coincidentally for the National Anthem we just happened to be on the same yard-line kind of across (from each other). That was a pretty unique feeling, being up there in New York, singing the National Anthem and seeing your younger brother straight across from you, knowing that he is about to be the starting quarterback for that team. That seems like a long time ago. A lot has happened since then. It's a different team for the Giants. Eli has won an unbelievable Super Bowl, and he's established himself as a top NFL quarterback. It's a game and the preparation is the same, but I'm not going to sit here and say that I don't take one moment to reflect that it is pretty special."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the team's motivation heading into the Giants game)
"I think the defense has plenty to be motivated by this week, playing the Giants. There is no question that they are going to be motivated by last week's game, so they'll be excited to play, as will our offense. I don't think any phase of our team played well enough against Houston to deserve to win that game. Houston certainly played well, I give them credit, but we did a lot of things that just really were disappointing and not solid, sound football. That's kind of where our motivation is. Kind of our theme this week is everybody has to take care of their job. If everybody does there job a little bit better, hopefully that should result in better football. That's kind of where the focus is this week."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on bouncing back after opening the season with a loss)
"I think the main thing that is applicable is that this is the 2010 season and what has happened in the past is the past. I think you have to be careful saying, 'Hey, we always win the next one after a loss. We don't lose two in a row.' There are no guarantees in that. It's about going out and trying to do it. We've got new players on this team. We've got some new coaches. It's really important, I think, that we have a great week of practice this week. I thought last week's practice probably wasn't as sharp as it could have been, therefore we played not as sharp. We have to have a better week of practice and hopefully, usually that does translate to the playing field. I think you have to be careful saying, 'Well, we've done this in the past, we'll do it again.' It's about what you're going to go out and do now, this year."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the game Sunday being the only thing the team has to show for itself right now)
"We're 0-1. That's what we are. We're playing at home. We're playing a great team, and we're playing on primetime TV. We certainly want to play better, but wanting to play better and going out and practicing in order to be better are two different things."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on if he looks forward or dreads the games against Eli)
"This year, like I said, this is really the only week that we've had to talk about it. Four years ago it was a lot different, we had to do a lot more, but we haven't had to do the sit-down interviews or anything like that, so it's been much shorter and easier on us this year. No, I probably don't look forward to it all that much. One thing I can do, and I know he does too, once you get out there playing you truly are competing against that defense and trying to win against that defense. But all that other stuff, I'm glad it's only once every four years."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on how do his parents look at it)
"You can certainly ask them, I know they've been interviewed. It's tough on them, but I think they'll both be glad when it is over."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on if any sibling rivalry existed between him and Eli growing up)
"Like I said, Eli and I have always had a very supporting relationship. I would never call it fiercely competitive. I've always tried to help, and he's always helped me. He's 30 years old, he's in his seventh year, he's got a consecutive starts streak, it's hard to find a quarterback that is more experienced or seen more defenses. He's seen three different defensive coordinators on his own team and then he plays in that division, which I think is probably the toughest division defensively in football with the Cowboys, the Redskins and the Eagles. He doesn't need me for advice. If he asks me something, I'll answer it. I'll ask him questions. I think it's more support each other, help each other. Quarterbacks overall pull for each other. That's how I am, but I think when it's your brother you pull a little harder for him."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on if he'll talk to Eli before the game)
"I will. I haven't yet, I'll probably talk to him maybe tonight or tomorrow. I think four years ago it was about a five-minute visit out there before the game, but usually you get there before the game and he has things he needs to do, I have things I need to do. Maybe a quick visit and then a handshake at the coin toss, I know he's a captain. Those are all things I look forward to."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on if he thinks QB-Jim Sorgi helps the Giants get ready for the Colts offense)
"Certainly a possibility. It's happened before with other teams we've played. Kelly Holcomb went from here to the Cleveland Browns. We've had quarterbacks coaches that have left here. LB-Keith Bulluck plays on their team, who has seen us before. It's not the first time you've had to take those type of things into account. It's not like we're not aware of it. It's something you do factor into the game plan."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on how do you take it into account)
"It would be hard to reveal too much of that, but you just understand that they have guys on their team that may know certain things, and I guess I'd just say be careful what you think you know."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on people being critical of the offensive line play)
"I'd say it was a team loss, and I don't think anybody, anybody, played well enough to win that game on Sunday. Once again, I'm not trying to slight Houston, Houston certainly made more plays than we did, they deserved to win. But I thought in all phases, just the execution of our run game, pass game, screen game, you name it, I don't think anybody was as sharp as they needed to be, especially early in the game, which is disappointing. You always want to get off to a good start on the road and we weren't real sharp early, therefore we got down and then we were always kind of in the hole. We've been down before to Houston like that, but we've always come back and kind of made the game a little tighter at the end, and we never got to where we put pressure on Houston. They had at least a two-score lead the whole second half. Those are things we need to improve. Everybody is always going to point to one thing or another, but the team lost. That's how we take it. This group sticks together, sticks up for one another. Everybody is determined to play better this week."
