Colts Defensive End Nominated for Weekly NFL Award
INDIANAPOLIS – Robert Mathis this past Sunday scored his first career touchdown – at any level – and in so doing, helped the Colts to a fifth consecutive victory.
On Tuesday, it was announced that he has been nominated for a weekly NFL honor.
Mathis, a six-year veteran defensive end and the franchise's second all-time sacks leader, has been nominated for the GMC Sierra Defensive Player of the Week Award for his performance in the Colts' 10-6 victory over the Cleveland Browns at Cleveland Browns Stadium this past Sunday.
Mathis, who leads the Colts with nine sacks this season and has 51 in his career, registered two sacks on Browns quarterback Derek Anderson and also returned a fumble 37 yards early in the fourth quarter for the game-winning touchdown.
Mathis was nominated for the award along with defensive end Jared Allen of the Minnesota Vikings, linebacker James Harrison of the Pittsburgh Steelers, defensive end Justin Tuck of the New York Giants and linebacker DeMarcus Ware of the Dallas Cowboys.
Fans can vote for one player in the category on NFL.com/gmc through 4 p.m. EST Thursday.
The winner will be announced Thursday evening on NFL.com.
After the regular season, five players will be nominated for GMC Sierra Defensive Player of the Year honors. Fans can vote for the winner on NFL.com/gmc throughout the month of January.
