HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –Brandon James) * *
"He's learning. Sunday is certainly going to be a great opportunity for him. We will get a chance to look at him, but obviously you can see he's got pretty consistent hands and he has some quickness. We will see what happens in live action."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –developing the return positions in the preseason)
"I think it is key for us. We need to get a couple of guys that can do it for us. We are going to give a number of guys an opportunity to see what they can do. It is going to be a great competition and we are all looking forward to that."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –blocking in the return game)
"I think they kind of go hand-in-hand. I do think if we can get a returner, a guy that is fairly elusive and can make some things happen, we are not talking about anybody that is going to return the ball for a touchdown every two or three returns. That's not going to happen in this league. There is too much speed in this league. We just need a guy who is going to be consistent and when there is a crack there he is going to get in it and maybe make a couple of guys miss. I think that you need not only a quality returner, but the blocking to go along with it. You can't do it alone."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –Brandon James being careful and patient)
"Every once in a while (the young returners) press a little bit too much. They certainly are going to get a feel for the speed in this league. They have not witnessed that yet. That will give them a real good view of exactly how difficult it is to be good in that particular area. That is the challenge, but I do think we have some guys with some ability and we will see what happens."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –Brandon James using the fair catch)
"Number one is he fields the ball. He has to have consistent hands every single time and don't let it hit the ground. We will feel pretty good about that. What goes beyond that once he catches it, secures it and don't give it back to them with a fumble or anything of that nature, and then get us some yards afterward. So it's a progression. It's kind of like my golf game. They say the first thing you have to do is make contact, the second thing is to get it airborne and the third is to hit it straight. I'm still on number one."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –judging that on a practice round, can it happen like that with return guys)
"We can make a determination on hands for the most part. But I think you have to also find guys that don't get distracted because guys get a lot closer to you a lot faster than you are accustomed to. All of that goes hand in hand and they have to get acclimated to that. It may take them a little while, but that is all part of it."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –Sam Giguere)
"Sam is big, strong and fast. He has girth to him. He has power. He has speed. We have seen him actually do it, particularly on kickoff returns. There is not so much guesswork there. To see him have an opportunity to do it consistently last year, he was injured a great portion of the season, so we will give him an opportunity to do it a few more times this preseason."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –sharing who is going to play what on Sunday)
"We are still in the final stages of that and the depth chart should be out already. We will see how it goes. Some of it is going to change day by day. It just depends. At some spots we are pretty thin and therefore some guys may play a little bit more than others."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –Anthony Gonzalez returning Sunday)
"I doubt it this week."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –reluctance of using Gonzalez in a return role)
"Not reluctant. If we have guys that we feel can go in there and do it consistently that have a good balance in terms of production is the most important thing, we'll do that. But in his particular case, we know he can catch the ball. He has real good hands back there. But we have some of these young guys that we want to see what they can do with it."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –Jeff Saturday)
"Everything went well and he is working on his rehab right now."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –being conservative with Peyton Manning's reps because of continuity of o-line)
"It is probably not going to deviate much from what we have done previously. We will have people in position to do their job. That's for sure."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on –getting Charlie Johnson and Jacques McClendon back)
"I could not give you anything of certainty."
