HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (General Comments) Monday* *
"Looking at the film, it was a good tough battle. Our opposition was certainly well prepared. We had some really fine efforts on a couple of fronts. Our offense was opportunistic and did a nice job of moving the ball. We didn't finish quite as well as we would like. We still got it done. The defense was good and solid, particularly the second half. They did a great job of stopping the run and shutting them down. Our special teams were good and solid."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On if the 49ers did anything he didn't expect) Monday
"I think oftentimes people take a little bit too much away from the opponent. They played well. They did a nice job. They hustled. They covered well. We just didn't get in sync like we normally do. I think the good thing is we find different ways to win. I think you have to do that. To win one game is difficult. Winning in this league requires your finding ways to win when things might not be going that well. Things weren't going well for us consistently, but yet we were still able to work through it."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On other teams executing a plan against the Colts similar to the 49ers plan) Monday
"I would that is certainly a possibility. It wasn't anything that we haven't seen before. It wasn't anything that was revolutionary. There were a few little wrinkles here and there. Timing is everything. There were a number of situations they were in the right place at the right time."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On how consistent he thinks the defense is) Monday
"I think we are moving in the right direction. We are becoming fairly consistent. You look at the first half, (Frank) Gore, who is an outstanding back, had 73 yards. He ended up with 91. To slow a back down as good as he is, I think we are moving in the right direction. I think we are coming along. We are doing some good things. Our defense did a great job. Obviously, getting a couple key sacks made a huge difference in the ball game. We are getting better."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On the running game at this point) Monday
"We just have to continue to work it. We can't get to the point where we stop trying to become effective in that area. I think there were some times when you look at the game when we needed to run the ball and we took 5:35 off the clock. We ate it right up at the end of the ball game. A lot of that had to do with Joseph (Addai) obviously finding some room. He made some nice runs. It's not like all is lost. We just might not have the numbers that we'd like to see at this point, but we are working on it."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On an update on WR-Anthony Gonzalez) Monday
"I'm not sure what is going to happen with him exactly. That is up to the doctors in terms of how he feels. I'm not certain we'll get much out of him this week. I'm really not sure. He is continuing to work. He continues to be evaluated. We'll take a look and see about the middle of the week where he is when we starting practicing on Wednesday. We'll see what happens."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On if RB-Donald Brown is coming back this week) Monday
"I'm not certain of that. They (doctors) feel he is coming along and making strides. We have to wait and see."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On LB-Philip Wheeler's performance) Monday
"He was in the short period of time when (Tyjuan) Hagler went out. From what I saw on film, he did a decent job. He was just feeling his way a little bit. It was the first bit of extensive action he has gotten. He may be required to do a little bit more in the future."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On the next stretch of games being a tough test) Monday
"I'm not certain about the stretch (of games). How about the next one? I look at this next one as a very tough game. Houston is hot right now. They are 5-3. It's the best record at this juncture that they have had. They have won three games in a row. They have been playing extremely well. We are concerned with them. We have to get focused on them come Wednesday and be prepared for a real tough game. All of our games have been very close over the last few years. I wouldn't expect this to be any different."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On this being a benchmark game for Houston) Monday
"I'm not certain how they view it. For us, we know how important it is for us. We know it's going to be a real challenge as well."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On the struggles of Texans RB-Steve Slaton) Monday, November 2, 2009
"He's a talented back. That you can't discount. He runs the ball extremely well. He can create some problems. There was a stretch there in the early part of the season he was on fire in terms of his yardage gained and things of that nature. I suspect with a guy of his talent and ability, he'll be back. We expect to see him in top form."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On why DB-Jamie Silva returned punts over DB-T.J. Rushing) Monday
"T.J. was not injured. At that time looking at our roster situation, it was the best move we thought we could make. It was the most constructive solution. Jamie has been returning kicks for us. He did some in preseason as well. He's very capable."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On the play of DB-Jamie Silva for special teams) Monday
"Solid. The guy makes a lot of plays. He is all over the field. He's a force to be reckoned with every time that ball is snapped on any of our kicking teams. He gives us great effort as well."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On being out of sync) Monday
"It's something that obviously doesn't happen to us very often. It's also something you can't put your finger on. That's why that general term is used for the most part, because it's a number of things. If it was one thing, I'd be able to tell you. There are a lot of different things that contribute to it. Thus the term, 'out of sync,' which is what we were for a little stretch."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (On winning close games) Monday
"Every week is a real test for us. Throughout the season we have played some close games. Our first game was a two-point game against Jacksonville. We came from behind to win against Miami. We've played with big leads and we've played in tight games. Those things are ways in which you will be tested in this league from week to week. If you are going to have a pretty good streak back to back, then you'll have some games like we had yesterday, and it will be a lot more than just one."
