(on the news of the day) * *
"Probably the only thing that would be a little different is (guard Ryan) Lilja did not practice yesterday. He had a bit of a shoulder bruise, and he will not play in the game (Saturday at Detroit). We anticipate he'll be back shortly. We're just being cautious at this point."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on if OG-Ryan Lilja's knee has even been an issue this preseason)
"No, he has not had any signs of any setback at all, (knocking on wood). He has performed extremely well."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on if they think OG-Ryan Lilja's shoulder bruise is threatening at all)
"No."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on how QB-Jim Sorgi has looked since returning to practice this week)
"(He) looked pretty good yesterday. He came along, and we just tried to make certain that we didn't really tax him. We just kind of let him go through at his own progression. He took part in some scrimmage plays and things of that nature, pass skeleton, but he did fine."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on if QB-Jim Sorgi will play Saturday at Detroit)
"There is a chance, but an outside chance."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on if the Colts will bring back QB-Chris Crane if QB-Jim Sorgi can't play Saturday at Detroit)
"At this juncture, we have not made a final determination on that. At this point, I don't foresee any real changes, unless something happens today."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on if RB-Joseph Addai is getting enough work this preseason)
"We think he is getting enough. It's not like he hasn't been around. We think he is getting ample work. We'll try to increase that a little bit, but we're not overly concerned about that area."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on how he knows where the running game is since the Colts usually throw the ball more in the preseason)
"We can see it on practice film, but I think in games when we did run the ball, in certain situations, we had an opportunity to examine that to see if we're progressing, if we're getting the little details done the way we like. The big thing is in any phase you look at, often times during the course of a ballgame because of the fact that it may be tilted one way or another, you didn't run it nearly as much or didn't throw it nearly as much. The thing we try to focus in on are the details of it, the fundamentals. Are we better in combination blocks? Are we better at handling the three-technique? Things of that nature. Are we better with our double teams between our tackle and tight end? We believe if we focus in on that segmented teaching, and we're getting better in that particular area, it will pay off for us in the long run."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on if he looks at the rushing numbers in the preseason)
"Obviously, I take a look at it, but I also know it's a bit skewed as well."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on how OT-Charlie Johnson is adjusting to left tackle)
"He's been doing well. Charlie has played there before and has been a guy that has had some experience in a number of different positions. He's doing a nice job in terms of the run and pass game."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on if he anticipates DB-Marlin Jackson playing Saturday at Detroit and how important it is for him to play in the preseason after missing the end of last season with a knee injury)
"We do anticipate him playing. We'll probably get him enough (time) where he feels comfortable. We think it's important for him to get a feel for the ballgame, the speed of it, get him a little action. But how much he'll play will be determined by the flow of the game. We think it's important because he has not been involved up to this point, so this will be an important game for him."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on what DB-Marlin Jackson brings not only to the pass defense but the rush defense)
"He sets a real tone. He is a guy who does a great job in terms of leadership. He does a tremendous job in terms of his intensity level that he brings to the game. We certainly benefit when he is out there on the field."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on the kick return team)
"We're still taking a look at a few guys here and there. So, we're still kind of in that process. I think Austin Collie may get a couple this week, punt returns. He has done a little bit. Taj Smith may get a little bit. Somebody different that maybe you haven't seen in terms of the kickoff return. The rest of the guys you've seen, obviously, T.J. (Rushing) and that group. We're going to try and spread it around a little bit to make certain that we get a real true evaluation of each guy that could possibly handle that duty for us. Jamie Silva is another one who will get a little action back there in terms of punt return. A lot of this depends on how the game is going, how many times they punt and so forth."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on DB-Jamie Silva)
"He has done a lot of things for us. He's a very heady football player, who does a great job in terms of his versatility, but he's also a guy who has a knack for being in the right place at the right time."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on if he wants more production out of WR-Pierre Garcon)
"The last game we spread the ball around quite a bit. I think there were 14 different receivers that caught passes. I think you may see that continue. That's a great thing about us, we have several guys that can do a lot of things with the ball when they get it. He's one of them, and I think his opportunities will come."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on who goes in with OG-Ryan Lilja out against Detroit)
"Jamey Richard, and there will be a little bit of a rotation there as well."
