Gary Kubiak Conference Call Quotes

HEAD COACH GARY KUBIAK (on how much the win over the Colts last year gave his team confidence going into this season) Wednesday, December 19, 2007 “I don’t know if a particular game does that.

HEAD COACH GARY KUBIAK (on how much the win over the Colts last year gave his team confidence going into this season) Wednesday, December 19, 2007

"I don't know if a particular game does that.  For us, it's been a learning process, and we're trying to turn this organization around and get it to the point where it feels like it can be a playoff team and eventually have a chance to compete for a championship someday.  And to do that in this league, you have to get consistent.  Our division is extremely difficult.  We get a chance to play (the Colts), or in my opinion the World Champs, as good a team as there is in football, twice a year.  So the steps we have to take are pretty big, but the thing that is right in front of us is we get a chance to play these guys.  So if that's where we want to be someday, we're going to have to find a way to compete with teams such as the Colts.  It makes it even more difficult doing it (in Indianapolis)."

HEAD COACH GARY KUBIAK (on having to play the Colts twice a year being in the same division) Wednesday, December 19, 2007

"That's kind of part of this league.  I don't think you get too caught up in that.  But we do have a very good division, probably as good as there is in football.  I really think that in all honesty, we need that if we're going to become a good football team.  We need those type of challenges, and it's making us better.  As hard as it is, it's definitely making us better.  We have a young football team that we're trying to make those strides.  So it's a tremendous challenge, but I think if you're going to get there it's the only way to go."

HEAD COACH GARY KUBIAK (on the improved quarterback play this year) Wednesday, December 19, 2007

"Yes, they have both (Matt Schaub and Sage Rosenfels) played pretty well for us.  Matt's gotten a little beaten up this year.  He had a concussion and of course has the shoulder problem right now.  He played very well when he was in there and healthy and Sage has come in and he's 3-0 as a starter this year.  We've been very pleased with the progress that we've made at that position.  We're trying to cut down our sacks, trying to be more efficient with the football, those types of things.  We like the direction we're heading from that standpoint."

HEAD COACH GARY KUBIAK (on both teams overcoming injuries) Wednesday, December 19, 2007

"Yes, I know how they feel.  It seems like for the last couple of years we've had our share of guys that have had to go on I.R.  The thing that's been disturbing, they've been significant, some very serious injuries like Dunta Robinson and (Charles) Spencer that we had last year.  Those are a part of the game and I think if you just make sure that you don't get in the mode of excuses and you just keep battling and giving other guys an opportunity, that's how your team gets better.  And that's where we're at right now as a football team.  We've actually probably through our problems gotten better because we've found some new players, we've picked up a few players that have become good players for us, and what it's done is strengthen our roster for the future."
