INDIANAPOLIS --- Colts cornerback Darius Butler hoped to be playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday, but some of his 45,000-plus Twitter followers still thought he was, after Malcolm Butler's game-winning interception for the Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX.
Malcolm is a rookie for New England out of West Alabama. Darius has played for the Colts for three seasons. He hasn't played for the Patriots since his first two seasons in the NFL in 2009 and 2010. No matter…
"Actually, earlier in the game I got a couple mentions, maybe once or twice. I didn't even really pay much attention to it," Darius Butler told Colts.com Monday, about people first mistaking him for Malcolm Butler on Twitter in the 1st half of the Super Bowl. "I was basically having a live commentary during the whole game. Once (the interception) happened, a lot of people started to mention me and congratulate me. That's when I kind of went with the flow and made it fun."
Butler was just getting warmed up…
Darius was watching Malcolm intercept that pass while he was at his best friend and Raiders safety Tyvon Branch's house for a Super Bowl party. Both went to UConn in college, another Patriots hotbed, and probably another reason so many of Darius Butler's Twitter followers mistook him for Malcolm.
"When I left the Patriots, I maybe had about 20,000 followers," said Darius. "I've been out of the building for three years. Malcolm made a great play. It was funny at the same time."
One person even told Darius it was meant to be because he (Malcolm) wore the same number as that follower's ACT score. You can't make this stuff up.
But congratulations to both the real and fake Malcolm Butler's on their seasons.
