HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (Overall impression) * *
"I think at the offset that obviously we played pretty well to start offensively. Moved the ball pretty well and got a field goal the first time around. And it took a pretty good distance to put it in the second time around on the second drive. Defensively, I thought we were opportunistic. Then obviously things started going the other way. We weren't playing nearly as well as we should have. The biggest thing was the turnovers. We had four turnovers. Obviously that's how you get a lop-sided score. I think they got 17 points off our turnovers and we only had 10 or so off their turnovers. But we have a lot of work to do, so we will keep working."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on new guys' performances)
"It's difficult to see. I think you can name a few names and see some guys do some pretty good things, Brandon James found a little crack here and there. Brody Eldridge, I think did a pretty good job. There are a number of guys I could name off the top of my head. Until I look at the film and do a real solid assessment, I certainly hate to say. Because often times the things that you didn't notice are crucial and I'll be able to track them better."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on Curtis Painter)
"It was tough. I think obviously he didn't play as well as he'd like to. Overall he needs a little help too. I think there were a couple of situations where often times you look at a quarterback and see their production and the things that are hidden, like dropped passes, opportunities to extend drives… It's a tough league. It's not easy. So you need everyone operating at their best."
HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on evaluating the first unit versus backups)
"You have to be upfront, honest and face the hard cold facts. You look at it as it is. Whoever did well, you tell them they did well. You talk about what they could have done better. Those guys that didn't do well, you talk about those situations. How can you do better? The first game for a lot of the younger guys is an eye-opening experience for them. It's a little bit faster than what they are accustomed to. You can tell them about the speed in practice, but until they are out there and actually can see it, they get a little better of a chance."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the first two drives)
"It was good. The first drive it obviously was great getting the turnover. You always want to be able to punch that in down there and get touchdowns. The guy made a pretty good play there on 3rd down. I thought we had a good play. Safety made a pretty good defensive play stopping that. 2nd drive was good. We got backed up I would say ninety yards and moved the ball. Austin (Collie) has worked on expanding his game, being able to play outside, not primarily in the slot like last year. He was the outside guy. (Anthony) Gonzalez got a catch. Nice to see him back in the lineup. He has been hurt the past couple of days. Good toughness by him being able to play today. I know he wants to be out there. He made a nice catch on the screen and I thought (Joseph) Addai made a heck of a run on the touchdown. Made a few guys miss. Nice play by (Jacob) Tamme on a little corner route filling in for Dallas (Clark). Tamme is really the only guy that has that versatility like Dallas which is good. There were some good things. I am sure there are some things we can do better, but a good way to start."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the offensive line missing some starters)
"I think anytime you have new guys in there playing I think you want to put them in the most comfortable positions they can be to succeed. I don't think you want to go out there and test them saying I'm going to hold the ball forever on this play gust to see if you can do your job or not. You want to help them. You want to get rid of the ball a little quicker, give them some quick passes. Give them some screens. Give them the full sort of arsenal of plays to put that defensive player in a bind, if you will. That is what Clyde (Christensen) tried to do. Clyde knew we had a couple new guys in there. You have Jamey (Richard) in there playing center for the first time in awhile. You have Jaimie Thomas playing his first NFL game at left guard. Obviously (Ryan) Diem is kind of the leader of that group and Diem is going to keep them together. I think you certainly do alter some things to give them the best chance to succeed."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on playing for the first time without Tom Moore calling the plays)
"It is certainly different. The first time somebody different calling the plays in. Clyde is calling the plays in. Tom is still there on the sidelines. Tom is at practice everyday. He knows what we are doing. He knows what plays we are calling. He and I still talk during the course of practice. We talked after the touchdown. He told me that was a good decision to run the ball left, making that cornerback make the play on Addai's touchdown run. I thought Clyde did a good job. He was very decisive in his play calls to me. That is something we will continue to grow with."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the running game)
"I think the games are still your best evaluation because you truly are going full speed. In practice we are not going 100%. We don't tackle full speed. We don't cut block. I think the game tape is the best way to evaluate what kind of strides you've made. You certainly would like to have your starting five offensive lineman in there, but that is the way it is. We don't sit and complain about it and whine about it. We just go to work. Whoever is in there throughout the years here it is their job to go in there and do the job."
QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the positives so far from training camp)
"I think guys are working hard. We have certainly had some injuries which all teams have. I think injuries, although they are disappointing, it is an opportunity for the younger guys to get some work. We are going to need some younger guys throughout the season, so it is a good opportunity for them. I think the work ethic has been good. We got to continue it this week and throughout training camp until the season starts."
QB-CURTIS PAINTER (on how he maintains his confidence when the game doesn't go the way he wants it to)
"I think there is certainly room for improvement, so I just look at it that way. It's a chance for myself and the rest of us to look at things and get better and improve as a team."
QB-CURTIS PAINTER (on how critical this preseason is for him)
"I think just for experience it's going to be good for me. Hopefully, I'll get the reps and just continue to try and get better. Hopefully, we can do that going forward."
QB-CURTIS PAINTER (on how much he needs some long drives to build his confidence)
"I think that certainly helps, when you get into a rhythm and you get things going. It always good to get drives going and it gets everybody fired up. That's certainly what you try to do and get some things going early that will help you do that."
QB-CURTIS PAINTER (on what QB-Peyton Manning said to him)
"We were on the phones with the coaches and talking to the coaches. We got the instructions from them."
QB-CURTIS PAINTER (on not feeling bad about the game because it is the preseason and now is the time for these mistakes to happen)
"I wouldn't say that I don't feel bad about. It's never fun, number one, losing and it's never fun making the mistakes. But you just have to look at it as an opportunity to correct those and get better and hopefully not make the same mistakes again."
WR REGGIE WAYNE (on if the first unit's performance was quick and efficient) Sunday, August 15, 2010
"Quick enough. We wanted to come out and start fast. The defense kind of gave us a boost getting a quick turnover. We kind of worked on open field and also worked on redzone, killed two birds with one stone. We were able to get out there and get some things done."
WR REGGIE WAYNE (on how hard it is to watch the preseason games after he is taken out) Sunday, August 15, 2010
"Long and boring, but that's expected. It's preseason. It's preseason for everybody, even you guys (the media). We let you have a couple of mistakes here and there, but you have to pick it up at the end."
WR REGGIE WAYNE (on what he and the team think as they head back to Anderson) Sunday, August 15, 2010
"We go back to Anderson anxious to look at this film and correcting our mistakes. We only have a few days left there, so we need to use those few days to the best of our ability. Like I said, we want to break this film down, correct our mistakes and get better. We can't go into these last couple of days in Anderson just hoping to hurry up and get out of there, we have to go in there and make things happen the way they should and move from there. We have a pretty good team and the sky is the limit for us. We just have to go out there and play Colts football and take it one day at a time."
WR REGGIE WAYNE (on if he got enough reps and looks today) Sunday, August 15, 2010
"Not enough. I just feel like whenever I put these pads on I want everything. But it's preseason, we usually get in and get out. We wanted to be as efficient as possible. We were able to get some things done, even though we'd like to score a touchdown other than a field goal. But like I said, it's preseason, it's something we need to work on and iron out and next time we get that opportunity we need to seize the moment."
WR REGGIE WAYNE (on what he tries to accomplish in training camp) Sunday, August 15, 2010
"My camp is going like what a 10-year vet's camp should go I guess. I know what I want to get out of it, but at the same time, I want to go above that. I go into every camp telling myself in the back of my mind I'm still a rookie. I want to get better. There is no way I want to maintain and stay the same. I always want to get better. These younger guys kind of keep me on my toes. They run around like spring chickens. I just want to get better. I just want everybody to know that I can still do this, no matter what year it is for me, and let them know that you can lean on me and you can count on me as a team to be there and do the things I've been doing in the past."
RB-JOSPEH ADDAI (on what he will tell the second unit that seemed to struggle compared to the first unit)
"I mean it's a new unit, a new team and you have to get adjusted to it. I think that's the big thing about preseason—you can go out there make your mistakes and learn from it, watch your film and whatever. The biggest thing is to stay in there, being focused, not being discouraged and keep working hard. That's the biggest thing and I think you will see that much improvement next game."
RB-JOSPEH ADDAI (on the right amount of reps he got in today's game)
"I think so, I can say that. I think when you go in there and get a little contact it is always a good thing for the first game, not too much to where you get beat up but get some contact, make your mistakes and try to move forward from that. I think what the coach gave us this game, I think it was good to give us some confidence going into the next game.
TE-JACOB TAMME (on the offense's performance)
"Offensively we did some good things, but we have to work on protecting the football. That hurt us and that's what we'll do, we'll work on that. Tight end wise, we had a lot of guys get reps. We all had a decent day, a lot of things I'm sure we'll improve upon on the field, but not bad the first time out."
TE-JACOB TAMME (on the Colts struggles in the preseason)
"We always want to win but there is a lot of things going on in the preseason. It is nice to get in there, for instance with Dallas not playing today, a lot of guys myself included trying to step up and fill the shoes. One thing we always talk about around here is we can't miss a beat when somebody's out."
DE-ROBERT MATHIS (on the 1st team defense forcing two turnovers and allowing 0 points)
"You can't ask for anything better. We still have fundamentals to get back to it wasn't all that great. Take it back to camp, correct our mistakes and take it from there. We want to be a defense that has a lot of turnovers and gets it back in our offense hands. We want to start off fast each game."
DE-ROBERT MATHIS (on the facing someone in a different colored jersey for the first time this year)
"It felt real good. Just to be able to hit somebody else in a different uniform and not worrying about 'come on man' felt real good.
DE-ROBERT MATHIS (on a short week heading up to Canada and breaking camp)
"Very short week. We play Thursday so go in with a quick turnaround, correct our mistakes real fast and get ready to play Buffalo."
* *
LB-GARY BRACKETT (on the 1st team defense forcing two turnovers)
"Yeah, I think we came out obviously, Antoine (Bethea) got us started with a turnover and I think we played pretty well when we were out there. I think we had a couple three and outs and we were up 10-0 when we went out. I think Jerraud (Powers) had another interception, really came up to be a big play. That's what we need to do, keep on getting after people taking the ball away."
LB-GARY BRACKETT (on shaking the rust off and a short week ahead)
"I think so, always good to get out there go against someone else and gauge yourself to see where you are at. Short week, head up to Buffalo but I think we'll be ready.
DB-JERRAUD POWERS (on the 1st team defense forcing two turnovers and allowing zero points)
"It felt good. Antoine (Bethea) sort of set the tempo with that first hit causing that fumble. It felt good going against someone that's got on a different color than you. I thought we flew around a little bit, but obviously we made some mistakes with the first preseason game, first game for a lot of games its been awhile. Your going to have a lot of jitters, you're going to mess up a little bit, but I thought everybody played hard, ran to the ball and the mistakes are things that we can certainly fix. We are still in training camp. The season doesn't start for another month and I thought the first team went out there and had a lot of fun."
DB-JERRAUD POWERS (on Antoine Bethea giving him a little assist with the tipped pass that led to the Powers INT)
"He said he saw everything like the premonition. He saw me coming over and then when I got the interception he said he saw (Jacob) Lacey doing a peel-back block or what not. Antoine had a big day today and obviously he's going to be great for this defense."
DB-JERRAUD POWERS (on recording an interception in a preseason game)
"Picks always feel good. If you can start getting them now than they will just carry on into the season. Our main goal this whole training camp is to create turnovers anyway we can get them. If its stopping them on fourth down, fumbles, interceptions, whatever. I think we started off pretty good with it today."
DB-JERRAUD POWERS (on heading up to Canada on Thursday to face Buffalo)
"It will be my first time crossing the border so I'm actually kind of nervous about it. It's going to be a fun trip playing in Toronto."
DB-JERRAUD POWERS (on running out-of-bounds on his interception return)
"I was just tired. (DB-Jacob) Lacey did have a good block, though. DB-Kelvin (Hayden) had a good block. All the guys had good blocks. I just wasn't aware of the sideline. WR-Reggie (Wayne) was on the sideline and he kept doing this (motioning) as if somebody was going to come try and strip me from the backside. I was just thinking about the team. I didn't want to lose the ball."
LB-PAT ANGERER (on how he felt getting a sack)
"It was fun, and then we started celebrating and the offense hurried up, so we had to get back and get the call."
LB-PAT ANGERER (on if he was nervous or if he felt comfortable on the field)
"I was nervous last night, but I felt pretty good out there today. Still, making mistakes on the field that I definitely have to get better and improve on, but it was fun going out there and playing."
LB-PAT ANGERER (on getting his first taste of the NFL)
"It was fun. It was a little bit of chaos for a little bit there, definitely made a lot of mistakes. Just have to improve and watch the tape, I know there are going to be a ton of things that I need to fix, but it was exciting."
LB-PAT ANGERER (on if his confidence grew by making some plays)
"The only reason I got sacks was because the defensive lineman cleared the guys out for me. I didn't even get touched. The credit really goes to them."
LB-PAT ANGERER (on emotions of running on the field for the first time)
"It was pretty cool. It was definitely a feeling you get once in a lifetime and I'm very lucky and fortunate to get that feeling. I was nervous last night, but I felt pretty good out there today. Still making mistakes out on the field that I definitely need to get better and improve on. It was fun going out there and playing"
