Colts Quotes vs. Kansas City

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on Mike Hart) “Mike did a nice job for us.  He came through, battled through a couple of injuries during the course of the week.

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on Mike Hart) * *

"Mike did a nice job for us.  He came through, battled through a couple of injuries during the course of the week.  Came in and certainly gave a heck of an effort to get the ball in the end zone.  So he did some good things for us."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on the Chiefs)

"Overall they did exactly what they've done in terms of keeping teams out of the end zone.  I think fewer points have been scored in set defense than anybody in the AFC, 38 points before our game.  Obviously I just think they continued.  They just did it in a different way.  They used a little bit more of a nickel front.  They did a couple of unusual things.  They did a good job.  You have to give a lot of credit to them.  They're a heck of a team."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on getting close but not getting the touchdowns)

"It's not easy.  Because you get down there and obviously you want to score touchdowns.  Because you know if you keep kicking field goals that they are always within striking distance.  That was the tough part."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on the Chiefs opening the game with an on-side kick)

"I was anticipating somebody would do it.  We've been talking to our team about the fact that in this league—the great thing about it is there's a lot of elite talent.  And if you show a weakness at any point and time, at some point and time it's going to come back up.  So you better work on it.  So that was something we anticipated possibly seeing."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on the Colts defensive performance)

"Defense did a heck of a job, against, I think, a high powered offense.  That does a tremendous job of both in the air and on the ground.  They did a great job in terms of just hanging in there, making a lot of big plays.  They got in the redzone on us twice and they came away with one field goal which was huge for us.  I think the third down conversions were huge.  I think they only made 1 out of 10, I believe it was.  Overall I think our defense played inspired.  I think they played tough.  They tackled well and obviously caused one turnover.  I think they did a nice job."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on play of Pierre Garcon)

"He made some tough catches out there.  Matter of fact, Pierre ran around well.  It was great to see him back out there.  He helped us not only in terms of the passing game, but also blocking.  I told Reggie (Wayne), he has made a lot of great catches over the years, but he made some tough ones today with guys kind of climbing on his back in traffic.  Very, very difficult ones that were huge in terms of keeping the chains moving for us.  Those guys, I think all of them in that area did a nice job of catching the ball, giving us an opportunity to score points."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on the Chiefs defensive packages)

"We have seen very little base defense.  We see mostly nickel because they are not quite certain how to handle Dallas (Clark).  Most teams would rather matchup Dallas with a defensive back as opposed to a linebacker, so we rarely see base defense to be honest with you."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on Adam Vinatieri)

"He is one of those guys you can count on.  He is a real pro.  Accurate as can be.  He was certainly huge for us today."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on the decision to start Aaron Francisco at safety)

"It was the best look for us.  He had performed well during the course of the week.  We were kind of trying to filter things out a little bit to see who fit the best and he certainly did."

HEAD COACH JIM CALDWELL (on the touchdown drive)

"We kind of mixed it up a little bit, but most of it was passing.  I can't remember exactly off the top of my head the sequence of plays, but Mike Hart kind of kept that chain moving a couple times.  We did a little bit more probably in the no huddle.  Peyton (Manning) probably picked the pace up a bit on them, just to keep down on their substitutions and things of that nature.  We caught them once trying to substitute which give us five yards.  Between mixing it up in terms of just run and pass and Mike being effective on the runs, was just enough to discourage them from possibly playing the two man line the entire time.  II think overall that drive was very, very important to us obviously and made a difference in the outcome."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the play of Mike Hart)

"Mike, he did a great job.  He has always done a good job for us.  He has been very solid.  Kind of had an interesting week practice wise.  He got injured during the week, didn't know quite what was going to happen and the next thing you know he comes out and does a heck of a job for us.  We certainly hope Joe (Addai) is okay, but that is why you got to have depth and everyone has got to ready every time out."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on this game being a "grind it out" kind of game)

"It is kind of what we thought we were going to see.  The Chiefs really came in and played a lot of eight man coverage, playing a lot of pass coverage.  We knew we weren't going to get many free plays or big plays down the field.  They were going to make you really kind of test your patience.  We knew we were going to have to be able to run the ball effectively.  We moved the ball pretty well down in the red zone, but we have to cap it in and get it in the end zone and not get field goals and that is what we did.  It was nice on that last drive.  That was the difference in the game getting that touchdown and plus our defense did a great job all day long today."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on the Chiefs defensive style)

"It is very much the same system.  It is similar to what he (Romeo Crennel) did in Cleveland the two times we played them when he was there.  That is kind of how they played us the past couple of times.  Played against him dropping a lot of guys in pass coverage, kind of testing your patience.  You have to avoid penalties and third and longs.  Third and longs those can be tough. We talk about just trying to stay in phase, being effective on first and second down and we did it at times and other times we didn't do that and forced us to give the ball back."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on being frustrated with settling for field goals)

"I don't know if it is frustrating, because that is kind of what you have to prepare for coming into this game.  We really thought we could move the ball.  It was frustrating getting down there close to the goal line and we thought we had a good red zone plan, but just a couple Chiefs made some good plays down there.  Disappointing turnover.  Poor decision, poor throw on my part.  Our defense did a good job of holding them to three and we had a good drive at the end of the fourth quarter that put the game away.  Certainly there are things we can work on and improve on, but that is kind of the game we expected coming in."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on bouncing back from last week's loss)

"It was certainly an important win.  I can't say we put anymore emphasis on this one as opposed to last week, because we really wanted to win last week and we really wanted to win the opener.  We certainly knew this was going to be a tough test playing the Chiefs.  They had a lot of momentum.  They were coming off their bye week fresh.  We knew we were going to get their best shot.  I thought we certainly got that.  It was just good we were able to make enough plays and our defense did a heck of a job all day which was awesome to see we wanted to bounce back after last week's game and kept us in there enough to score enough points to win."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on where the Colts are at after 5 games)

"The expectations are always that there will be some unknowns.  There has been a lot of shuffling around.  We have some new players in there.  It was good to get Pierre (Garcon) back out there.  Today it was his first game since the opener.  Joseph (Addai) got banged up today.  I think every week is like it is in the NFL.  We are trying to do what we have to do on that week to win.  People want to compare the previous seasons and what we have done, plays of our offense and that is something that we are not really doing.  We are trying to form the identify of this team and that is something that will progress throughout the season."

QB-PEYTON MANNING (on )

"Do whatever we have to do to win.  I am just looking for wins.  We would like to put a couple of wins in a row.  We have a tough game next week against the Redskins before the bye.  We are just truly kind of one week at a time.  Try to do whatever we have to do to win.  All the basic things of offense.  Third down production, redzone production, protecting the ball.  Those things we probably didn't do as well today.  We probably weren't very good on third down.  1 out of 3 in the redzone as far as getting touchdowns.  We had the one turnover backed up that like I said was a poor decision to throw on my part."

WR-REGGIE WAYNE(on today being a day that the offense had to be patient)

"I think we're going to have to be patient from here on out until we get our running game going, the way it's supposed to. Everybody is going to be keying on the pass forcing us to run. We just have to find a way from here on out. It's going to be tough. Like QB-Peyton (Manning) said last week, we're in a hole, we've got to find a way to dig ourselves out of this hole."

WR-REGGIE WAYNE (on team's aren't going to get in shoot-outs with them anymore and let the Colts pass up and down the field)

"I would love it, but it probably won't happen. It's going to be close ones. But we've been there before, we just have to figure out a way, just play together and get it going."

WR-REGGIE WAYNE (on if that defense is similar to what they've seen in previous games against New England when Def. Coord. Romeo Crennel was there)

"It is. That's kind of what it reminded me of, the New England games. Whenever we played those guys in the past it was always a grinder. It was always like that. That's kind of how it was today. The defense did a great job. You guys (the media) gave them so much flak. The guys finally stepped up to the challenge today, and hopefully we can get them to do it for the rest of the year."

WR-REGGIE WAYNE (on some people might say QB-Peyton Manning was less than sharp)

"You know what? Those guys, they gave a lot of looks. They did a lot of double-teaming on TE-Dallas (Clark). They did some cover-two, cover-two man on me, forcing Peyton to go elsewhere. (Def. Coord. Romeo) Crennel has been there before. He's seen us numerous times. Our offense really hasn't changed much. They did a great job. You just have to take your hat off to them. Peyton was just trying to be patient, trying to make a play on the interception. That's how it goes. We just have to lean on each other and find a way to get it done."

WR-REGGIE WAYNE (on finding a way to win when QB-Peyton Manning's numbers weren't great)

"We've got some playmakers. We've got some ballers on this team, offensively and defensively. On the offensive side, we've got some guys that can get open, that can get the job done even when Peyton is off. I felt like he did pretty good today with what they were giving us. He hung in there and did what he was supposed to do. He got the balls to the guys that he believed were open. That's what quarterbacks do."

WR-REGGIE WAYNE (on how critical this game was for them)

"For one, you want to defend home. You always want to win at home. Two, yes, we're 2-2, you might say it's unfamiliar territory, but don't get spoiled. It's still the NFL. No game is easy. It's a situation we've been in before, but just not normally. We know what we have to do. A lot of the older guys are telling the younger guys, just keep chopping wood, just keep pushing and it's all going to work out for us. This was a great game for us to rely on all three phases to get the job done."

RB-JOSEPH ADDAI (on his shoulder)

"I won't actually know that (tonight), tomorrow that's kind of when you feel more the aches and pains. Right now, I can manage it, turning to the left is kind of sore. Tomorrow, I will have a better feel on how I'm feeling as far as my shoulder/neck area."

RB-JOSEPH ADDAI (on being able to move the ball, but not score touchdowns)

"Frustrating, but we know it's a long season, and we know the guys on the other side are getting paid too. That's just another thing that we have to go work on. We always try to find things to work on and correct, and that's just one of those things, trying to finish it up in the red zone."

RB-JOSEPH ADDAI (on if Kansas City showed them something defensively that they weren't expecting)

"You know what? A lot of teams show us a lot of things that we don't expect, so I think we kind of expect for them to show us what we don't think they will show. They showed some different defenses. I think we were ready for it."

RB-JOSEPH ADDAI (on RB-Mike Hart's play)

"It was real good to see Mike (get to play). He's a guy that you want on your team. He's going to do whatever, and he got a chance to get in there and get a couple of runs and he showed what he can do."

RB-JOSEPH ADDAI (on the Colts playing for themselves this week)

"Fans really don't see the Colts 2-2, and we don't panic ourselves, we might have people that kind of get scared or whatever, but we understand that we have to go back to the basics. So, we had the offense playing for the defense, defense playing for the offense (and) special teams is playing for everybody. It's kind of let's lean on each other and get this win for each other."

RB-JOSEPH ADDAI (on how much upside he thinks the Colts have)

"I think we have a lot to improve on. We showed some good things and made some mistakes. That's a good thing about practicing and going to watch the film, you can go and correct what happened and continue from there."

RB-JOSEPH ADDAI (on what it says about this team to only score one touchdown but be able to win)

"It says a lot. We've got guys that want to go out there and play no matter what the score is saying and regardless of who we are playing. No matter what, the biggest thing is getting that 'w'."

WR-PIERRE GARCON(on the offense not often being stopped in the red zone)

"They were playing good defense. They were throwing different things at us that we hadn't seen. They had a bye week, so they had extra time to prepare for us. They came in and played well. They did a real good job."

WR-PIERRE GARCON(on the offense knowing they have K-Adam Vinatieri backing them up)

"Vinatieri is an old veteran, so we can always rely on him, but we don't want to use him a lot. But we know that is a sure few points. That's a good fallback."

WR-PIERRE GARCON(on the team improving to 3-2)

"We know we have to take it one game a time. We have to get those division game. We have to get the wins in the division. We've got Houston coming in after they bye, so we'll be ready for that. We've got Washington (next weekend), so we have to keep winning and keep it up."

LB- GARY BRACKETT (on the defense's performance today)

"Obviously the last couple of weeks, I don't think we felt like we played to our ability. I think we can play better, and I think we went out there and got it done today. Anytime you can hold those guys to field goals and field goal attempts, and then they go down and miss that last one, I think that's huge. Obviously, our offense put some points on the board and (we) hold a team to nine points, I think you have a good chance of winning."

LB- CLINT SESSION (on the defense playing better) Sunday, October 10, 2010

"These guys are pros and we help each other out. The offense had some situations where they couldn't get things totally taken care of this week, and we had their back. We took it personal the way we've been talked about. We're out here playing defense, we're not just out here running around. We are trying to stop teams. We had a lot of criticism come at us this week and we came out and played and that's how we have to continue the rest of the season."

K- ADAM VINATIERI (on kicking four field goals today after kicking none last week)

"You never know what the course of a game is going to go like and every game is different. Sometimes you're scoring touchdowns all the time, and today we had a little tougher time getting in the end zone until right there at the end. When you go out there and put some points up and kind of keep them behind us and have them chasing us, it's kind of a good thing. I know it would've been nice to get a couple of touchdowns in the red zone, but field goals are a good thing. I was happy to get out there and help the team win a game."

DT- DAN MUIR (on a lot of people discounting the defense) Sunday, October 10, 2010

"That's what people talk about. Defense, what is wrong with us? One thing I fought myself on was paying attention to it. We can come out here and play with anybody. It's a reminder for everybody. We have to come out and play."

DE- DWIGHT FREENEY (on the defense trying to prove their doubters wrong)

"I just know we've got a lot of pride on the team and defensively. It's never as bad as people say it is. It's never as good as people say it is. It is usually somewhere in between a lot of times. We understood that prior to this game we had a lot of issues we needed to correct. A lot of problems that happened are self-inflicted. And, we came out today and played the way we were supposed to play.

RB- MIKE HART (on his 11-yard touchdown run) Sunday, October 10, 2010

"Its moments like this that you don't get all the time and when they pop, you try to take advantage of it. Its fun. Once I got the ball and the o-line, if you see it on film and watch the play, they took care of the front seven. I had two safeties back there and I was on the three- to four-yard line and it was my job to get in from there."
