WESTFIELD, Ind. – Anthony Richardson rolled into Grand Park on Wednesday morning with grin, a Kappa Alpha Psi shirt and, as expected, nothing holding him back.
"I'm not expecting any limitations right now," general manager Chris Ballard said. "None."
The Colts held Richardson out of their final veteran minicamp practice in early June due to a sore shoulder, but emphasized the issue was neither serious nor a concern. Richardson threw over 100 times the day before he was held out, Ballard said.
During the Colts' six-week summer break, Richardson participated in an informal throwing session with teammates organized by wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr., and he said last week he'd be ready to go for training camp.
And when the Colts hit the field at Grand Park for their first training camp practice of 2024 on Thursday, Richardson will be out there – and the expectation is he won't need any rest or maintenance days leading up to Sept. 8's season opener against the Houston Texans.
Ballard, too, said while no final decision has been made, "most likely" Richardson and Colts starting players will play in preseason games next month.
Richardson played in two preseason games in 2023, one before he was named the team's starter and one after. He attempted 12 passes and had two rushing attempts over 29 snaps in the Colts' preseason opener against the Buffalo Bills, then threw 17 passes with five rushing attempts over 37 snaps in the Colts' preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Richardson was named the Colts' starting quarterback in between those games, and after two joint practices with the Chicago Bears, he and the rest of the Colts' starters were held out of their team's second preseason game.
Over four regular season starts, Richardson went 50/84 for 577 yards and rushed 25 times for 136 yards over 173 snaps. He accounted for seven touchdowns (three passing, four rushing) before sustaining a season-ending shoulder injury against the Tennessee Titans in Week 5.
"We liked all the stuff we saw but he's still gotta go out and prove it over the course of time, like any player does," Ballard said. "You can be a flash but he's still gotta go prove it over the course of time. But we think we've got a good football team around him where he doesn't necessarily have to carry us."
