INDIANAPOLIS –Perhaps more than ever, the Colts would be well served to have a consistent and productive rushing attack in 2017.
With Andrew Luck working his way back up to full health, a fruitful ground game would be welcomed.
The Colts head into their 2017 Training Camp with some stability, and unique options, behind Frank Gore.
At the conclusion of the team's offseason program, Chris Ballard spoke to the depth at running back.
It starts with Robert Turbin, who was re-signed in March to a two-year contract.
With Gore healing his body for much of the spring, Turbin more than handled the added responsibility as a starting running back.
"Turbin was outstanding," Ballard said. "Same guy every day, works, great professional."
After Turbin, the Colts will likely turn to a quicker option.
Rookie Marlon Mack battled a spring hamstring injury, but did show the speed and vision that has Ballard excited to see more from the fourth-round pick in camp.
Josh Ferguson remains a name to watch.
An undrafted free agent in 2016, Ferguson had some early-season struggles last season, taking him out of the offensive game plan.
A year later, with a new regime in place, Ferguson impressed.
"I thought Ferguson was really strong," Ballard said after the offseason program.
Undrafted rookie Dalton Crossan remains a name that Ballard highlights. Is there room for Crossan to be one of the four-ish running backs on the 53-man roster?
The days of conjecture are about done for the Colts.
Answers are coming.
"It's easy to run around in shorts," Ballard says, referencing the offseason program.
"With (the running back position) you really don't know until the pads come on."
