INDIANAPOLIS —The University of Kentucky this week announced the hiring of former Indianapolis Colts assistant coach Brad White as their outside linebackers coach.
"When I talked to Brad, he impressed me with his expertise, his NFL experience and what a very, very good technician he is," Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops said in a release. "Brad came highly recommended from people I know at Indianapolis. In addition to his knowledge of coaching linebackers, he has 'big picture' expertise."
White's new position with the Wildcats represents a return to the college ranks; he began his coaching career in 2007 as a defensive graduate assistant at Wake Forest before moving on to Murray State in 2009 (as safeties coach) and the Air Force Academy in 2010 (inside linebackers).
White was hired as a defensive quality control coach with the Colts in 2012, and in 2014, was named assistant linebackers coach. He spent the previous three seasons as outside linebackers coach.
He's the 12th Colts coach from their 2017 staff who has formally joined another team's staff for 2018, and the third to return to the college ranks, joining Joe Gilbert (University of Arizona) and Frank Giufre (UConn).
Those who have formally joined other NFL staffs include:
• Former assistant head coach/offensive line coach Joe Philbin, tight ends coach Jim Hostler and assistant special teams coach Maurice Drayton are now with the Green Bay Packers.
• Former offensive assistant/assistant quarterbacks coach Tim Berbenich and running backs coach Jemal Singleton are now with the Oakland Raiders.
• Former wide receives coach Sanjay Lal is expected to assume the same position with the Dallas Cowboys.
• Former quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer is now with the Seattle Seahawks.
• Former special teams coordinator Tom McMahon and defensive backs coach Greg Williams are now with the Denver Broncos.
Former Colts area scout Dave Razzano also has been hired on with the Raiders as their Director of Football Research.
The Colts, meanwhile, are yet to hire a new head coach after their decision to part ways with Chuck Pagano after six seasons. General manager Chris Ballard said after the season that the team's new head coach will have input into the members of his staff in Indy.
