Fuel Up to Play 60

Fuel Up to Play 60

Launched by the National Football League (NFL) and National Dairy Council (NDC) in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Fuel Up to Play 60 is a free in-school health and wellness program that empowers youth to take action to improve nutrition and physical activity. The goal is to support sustainable changes in schools, for children to be physically active for 60 minutes a day and choose tasty, nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy foods, fruits, vegetables and whole grains). Since Fuel Up to Play 60 began in 2009, more than 73,000 schools have enrolled nationwide, including over 70% of the schools in Indiana thanks to partnership between the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana dairy farmer families.

Having access to the Fuel Up to Play 60 Playbook school, grants, fun rewards and additional resources help make the customizable program easy for any school to implement and any student to be engaged. This program is a great compliment to school wellness goals. Is your school ready to Fuel Greatness?

School of the Month | November 2022: Merrillville Community School Corporation

Angelica Claiborne, Food Service Director for the Merrillville Community School Corporation, saw a need to make breakfast more accessible to the students at Merrillville High School.  It was a challenge for students to get off the buses, grab a breakfast and be in their first period classroom on time so Angelica used Fuel Up to Play 60 funds for a breakfast cart that includes milk and yogurt parfaits daily!  Serving breakfast has been so successful that Angelica would like to buy carts for at least four of her elementary schools.

The North Spencer School Corporation, winners of the 2021 Hometown Grant, with help from the Spencer County Purdue Extension, used their grant winnings to provide district wide smoothie taste testing to encourage students to try new dairy foods. Their activation was a success as the district now offers smoothies EVERY week using several different recipes to incorporate not only dairy, but fruits and vegetables as well.  In addition to the taste testing, the Spencer County Purdue Extension team led by NEP Community Wellness Coordinator, Erin Meyer, visited EVERY classroom in each of the 4 Elementary schools in the district!

School of the Month | April 2021 – Brownsburg West Middle School

Brownsburg West Middle School's Fuel Up to Play 60 Club had lots of fun last week making s'mores smoothies! Plain yogurt, chocolate milk, cocoa, marshmallow cream, and graham cracker crumbs. They topped them with mini marshmallows and more crumbs. It was more sugar than they typically serve, but they burned it off with a bone strength exercise video from the Fuel Up to Play 60 website and pedaling on their blender bike!

Carmel High School's food service team, along with other volunteers, has been working tirelessly to keep students and their families fed during the pandemic. Families pull into the drive thru pick up, check in, pop open their trunk, and then a volunteer places their meal bags and a gallon of milk into the car. The Indianapolis Colts Mascot, Blue, also attended this event to help out and bring a fun, exciting bonus for those stopping by. What a phenomenal way to support the students and community during these different times. Carmel High School continues to #FuelGreatness every year!
